Birthday LAN Party??

Good evening all,

So, I was looking at my calendar this week and I realized two things.

The first was that my birthday has recently passed by, and I had to work on something for the space during it rather than properly celebrate, which is kind of against my principles. ;) The way to fix this bad karma is to have something awesome come back out of the space to atone for that!

The second thing I realized was that in nine days it will be the third anniversary of Oxhack's formal founding, of us adopting a constitution and starting to sign up members, way back in the OARC days. In other words, the space's birthday is coming up Monday the 21st, and we should also plan something awesome for that!

So here is what I propose: let's have a birthday LAN party!

Cake, balloons, games of all types and friends, what's not to like?  I'd also like to open this to the public, to build our capacity for this type of event and reach some new people, but opinions welcome.

I've been saying for a long time that we should start a LAN party tradition, something that we do intermittently, to which we invite both the locals and also people from other spaces.  We would do this quarterly, say, once every three months or so on a known-in-advance date.

So all that said, I propose we hold the first one of these on a Friday night coming up, either the 25th of March, the 1st of April or the 8th of April, as people prefer. All types of gamers welcome, but especially older PC games and non-shooters. I believe we can also get a hold of at least 3 projectors, if that's of interest.

P.S. Someone from Swindon has already offered to bring his Quake 1 LAN PC setup for Win/OSX/Linux. Personally, I'm thinking Elder Scrolls, either the MMORPG or Morrowind. Everyone welcome!

Multiplayer games that have been suggested include among others:

Quiplash

Nidhogg

Left 4 Dead

Towerfall Ascension

..and Henry suggests not Minecraft because it sucks people and resources in for long periods in a not really interactive way.

Also sounds like a file server with installers is in our future if we're wise.

What do people want to play, and any retro suggestions? What infrastructure/consoles could you bring?

the advantage of the fortress games are that they are designed to be a
team games.

Whilst the hardware requirements of Unreal Tournament are sufficiently
old that it can pretty much run on anybodies laptop,
there are both PC and Mac versions available

alternatively if you want to play with a quake engine Q3F is fortress
running on the quake 3 engine

I've got an Xbox 360 Rock Band kit (game + 1 x guitar, 1 x drums, 1 x mic, plus the console itself if we really don't have enough Xbox 360s floating around the place already) that I'd be happy to lend for the occasion, although it probably requires someone to collect from Cutteslowe because I don't particularly want to lug it down on the bus...

I found some on ebay listed as faulty going very cheap, i bought one and i
found it worked after a hard reset , so the space bought a few and of 6 only
1 needs repair.

Ok, in order to do logistics for the upcoming birthday LAN party, we urgently need to confirm which games people want to see supported.  We have to start small this time, so probably only a handful of games to start with, given that licensing seems to be rather a pain.  So what do people want to see supported? 

Just to be clear, people can bring other games obviously than just the ones we are officially supporting, which would in fact be great.  But you will likely have to bring your own hardware also, in at least some cases.

So the games I know we want to see are currently:

Rockband

Quake 1 (in cooperation with Jamie from Swindon)

I'd like to see the Garry's mod Prop Hunt, which looks hilarious, though £7 per Steam copy apparently.

Mariokart

Any requests for Kate's Unreal Fortress/Tournament?

Any requests for Quiplash, Nidhogg, Left 4 Dead or anything else?

Any other interested parties in Elder Scrolls Online-?

It looks like my last email was read by a decent number of people.  The number of participants in the survey nearly doubled (thanks)!

 

Here’s a quick summary of the data so far:

 

Roughly 2/3 of you aren’t too fussed about playing specific games.

 

A number of games have been mentioned specifically:

·         Diablo II (PC)

·         FreeCiv (PC)

·         Trine

·         Metal Slug

·         Warsow (Free FPS)

·         Towerfall

·         Team Fortress

·         Mario Kart (which one is unspecified)

·         Prop Hunt

·         Speed Runners

·         Guitar Hero/Rock Band

 

But only two have stood out with multiple mentions:

·         Guitar Hero/Rock Band with 5 mentions

·         Mario Kart with 3 mentions

 

Matt W. has kindly offered to lend us his Rock Band gear, but it needs to be collected from Cutteslowe.  Do we have any volunteers to pick it up?

As for Mario Kart, no actual version was specified.  There is a Wii with 4 wiimotes at the Hackspace (thanks Nathan) but no copy of Mario Kart.  Does anyone have one?

One more thing...

If you have game controllers, please bring them!

Specifically, wireless Xbox 360 controllers would be nice but USB controllers of any kind would be convenient.
Also, if anyone has an extra USB Xbox 360 wireless controller receiver that would be mega handy too.
