Please call your senator today in support of AB857! Talking points and sample letter below. If you live in Santa Rosa, come to the meeting on Tuesday 6/18 if you can!

We support divestment from fossil fuels, detention centers, prison labor, and more. Most if not all of us have moved our money out of big banks to local banks and credit unions which are socially responsible. But large institutions such as cities cannot do that.

Public Banking not only enables our large institutions like city and county governments to divest from big banks (as local banks can only insure accounts up to $250,000), public banks can re-invest in our communities.

Half the cost of infrastructure is financing. If a city finances infrastructure through its own bank, it can save up to HALF the cost of infrastructure. Additionally it can save millions paid in annual fees to big banks. As a wholesale bank, it will not compete with local banks but instead partner with them to offer low interest loans - which not only benefits the local community but also helps local banks to prosper. We can use the money saved towards much-needed programs:  affordable housing, ways to help the homeless, fire-resilient building, climate adaptations, low interest loans to those rebuilding after the fires, and more.

Thanks!

Subject: Support Public Banking at SR City Council! 6/18 @4pm

Our Money, Our Values, Our Bank.
Hello Public Bank supporters.  Apologies for the spam. We are following up with this morning's newsletter for two reasons.
1.) There was a discrepancy in the time posted for the Santa Rosa City Council meeting on 6/18.  The meeting starts at 4pm, and Public Banking is the first item on the agenda.  Below are some talking points for phone calls, emails, or public comment.

2.) Just in, TODAY AB 857 is in the Senate Banking and Finance committee.  Calls and letters of support will be received until 5pm.
Letters should be sent to: rae.f...@sen.ca.gov.

3.) Next, AB 857 is expected go to the Senate Governance Committee.  Letters can be sent through the CA Legislative Portal.

Here is a Sample Letter to Mike McGuire.  Feel free to make a copy and include some of the speaking points below.

THANK YOU!

Why Santa Rosa City Council
Should Endorse AB 857:
Talking Points

  • AB 857 creates a pathway for cities, counties, and regions to form their own banks, owned by local agencies and licensed by the California Department of Business Oversight.
  • AB 857 is endorsed by the California Democratic Party, major unions including the California Nurses Association and California Labor Federation, and a growing list of cities, counties, and statewide and local organizations listed here.
  • Public banks will give local governments an opportunity to divest from unethical banks that finance private prisons, weapons manufacturers, and the fossil fuel industry.
  • This legislation offers choices but doesn't require local governments to take any action. It's not a mandate!
  • Public banks under AB 857 will be locally controlled and accountable to the people.
  • Public banks will help create jobs by providing affordable financing for small businesses and public infrastructure.
  • Public banks under AB 857 will be subject to safeguards such as collateralization and FDIC insurance.
  • Public banks can partner with local banks and credit unions, helping them to thrive as they do in North Dakota, where the state bank is celebrating its 100-year anniversary in 2019.
  • AB 857 can benefit even the smallest cities. They will be able to band together as a Joint Powers Authority to create a regional public bank.Keep it local! If a public bank can benefit particular needs or projects in your area, mention them in your letter. Affordable housing? Transportation?

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 18, at 4pm at City Hall. Address is:
100 Santa Rosa Avenue
Santa Rosa, CA 95404
