Hi folks!
Buildings are the second highest source of emissions in CA after transportation due to the use of 'natural' (methane) gas. I've been working with the Campaign for Fossil Free Buildings in Silicon Valley. We've been working city by city to pass strong reach codes/bans on methane gas in all new construction - building codes which go beyond the statewide energy efficiency standards/requirements. We've been very successful - but obviously a statewide all-electric baseline would accelerate our transition away from fossil gas ('natural' gas). A fellow supporter says:

There’s a real chance that CEC could scoot up their timeframe to require all electric buildings* (likely with exceptions) to 2022. PG&E, SoCalEdison, AIA-California, SMUD, BAAQMD and many other significant stakeholders are supporting this.

Here's a great op-ed by one of the FFBSV members:
The case to ban natural gas from new construction

Hello all,

I'd like to invite you to sign on to a letter to the California Energy Commission (CEC) supporting an all-electric baseline in the 2022 Buildings Code.

Right now, the CEC is preparing to adopt the 2022 codes for buildings, set to go into effect in 2023.

The CEC has the opportunity to protect our health and safety by shifting new buildings away from gas. We are calling on the CEC to make clean, efficient, all-electric buildings the standard for new construction going forward. This means changing the "baseline" (the energy usage goal against which all proposed buildings are evaluated) in the 2022 building code to be based on an efficient and clean all-electric home.

To sign on, please use this link and complete by next Wednesday (8/5) to help push the CEC to adopt an all-electric code.

Attached is our letter and a factsheet explaining the importance of having an all-electric baseline in the 2022 code.

Thank you for your consideration and please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Lauren Cullum
