Hi folks,

Public finance expert Tom Sgouros is coming to Santa Rosa to give a presentation on public banking this Tuesday, May 15 at 7pm! See below for details.

"Put your money where your solidarity is." - Mazaska Talks ("money talks")

Why a Public Bank:
Standing Rock and other Native American leaders continue to ask supporters to continue to work on divestment from fossil fuels. However cities and other large institutions cannot move their accounts away from Wall Street banks because local banks and credit unions can only insure accounts up to $250,000. The only way for a city or other large institution such as San Francisco and New York public pension funds is to bank with a public bank. That is why some Native American leaders such as Lakota People's Law Project and Mazaska Talks are actively promoting public banking. The City of Santa Rosa is really hurting financially because of the cleanup after the fire, and repairs and the rebuild which will continue for years. Santa Rosa needs to start a public bank which has huge local financial benefits: it can cut the cost of infrastructure IN HALF, and partner with local banks and credit unions to offer low interest loans, and help us adapt to climate change.

Please endorse the resolution to start a public bank. Attend the Tom Sgouros presentation and get some of your questions answered.

Hope to see you there!

The Friends of Public Banking Santa Rosa welcome:

Tom Sgouros, public finance expert to speak about Public Banking

Tuesday, May 15 - 7 PM to 9 PM
Christ Church United Methodist

We are very honored to welcome Tom Sgouros to come speak to our community about public banking. Tom Sgouros is a public policy researcher and writer. He consults with city, county and state officials about banking, economics, budgeting, and better ways for government to manage their citizens’ money.

If the City of Santa Rosa were to start a public bank, it could help cut the cost of infrastructure in half, and provide low interest loans – both desperately needed to rebuild Santa Rosa, build/incentivize affordable housing, transition to clean energy, address fire resilience and adapt to climate change in the years to come.

Tom Sgouros will be giving a general overview of public banking. He will also discuss how the City of Santa Rosa could partner with the City of Eureka (both charter cities), to establish a Joint Powers Authority and implement a public bank together to serve the North Coast region.
