Dear Friend,
Longtime environmental activist and 350.org [1] co-founder, Bill
McKibben, wrote an opinion piece in today's _New York Times_ about how
much of the world's investment community has decided to stop investing
in fossil fuels. It's become clear to more and more investors that the
future of fossil fuels is increasingly limited and, as such, is a bad
bet. Here are a few excerpts from the article:

Something big is starting to shift. After years of effort from
activists, there are signs that the world’s financial community is
finally rousing itself in the fight against global warming. A foretaste
came last month when Norway’s sovereign wealth fund [2] — the
world’s biggest — said that it is considering divestment from
holdings in fossil fuel companies.

The European insurance giant Axa announced [3] it would divest itself of
more than $825 million in investments in oil production and pipelines in
the tar sands of Canada for both ethical and business reasons.

And most important, the World Bank on Tuesday said it would by 2019 end
all financial support [4] for oil and gas exploration (it had earlier
made the same pledge about coal) because of the simple facts of a
“rapidly changing world.”

Think of how significant it would be if the United States government
were to actively support research and the expansion of clean energy
sources instead of ending its support for them. The current
administration is opening the Arctic Wildlife Refuge and other formerly
protected lands to fossil fuel industries for coal mining and oil
drilling. Our leaders just need to be retired!

That can begin if there's a large voter turnout for the 2018 election.
The House and Senate can be transformed by environmentally aware
representatives and senators who will serve citizens ahead of the fossil
fuel industries who, more or less, own too many members of Congress.

For the record, _"_Sixty-eight percent of Americans -- the highest
Gallup has recorded -- believe increases in Earth's temperatures over
the last century are mainly due to the effects of pollution from human
_activities."
_(news.gallup.com/poll/206030/global-warming-concern-three-decade-high.aspx
[5])

And that is backed up by this: "Multiple studies published in
peer-reviewed scientific journals show that 97 percent or more of
actively publishing climate scientists agree*: Climate-warming trends
over the past century are extremely likely due to human_ activities."
_(https://climate.nasa.gov/scientific-consensus/)

Here's the complete McKibben article:

We'll get there, if we stay aware and keep actively pursuing basic
justice and common sense.

Best wishes,
E.Bear
