Notes from last meeting:

SoCoCAN! Zoom Meeting – Sept. 14, 2020, 7-9 PM

Present:  June Brashares, Terri Moon, Nichole Warwick, Teri Shore, Terry Harrison, Kevin Conway, Steve Birdlebough, Alexa Forrester, Alice Goldberg, Amy Jolly, Mark Mortensen, Emerald, Anna Jacopetti

Facilitator:  Nichole Warwick

Minute Taker:  Anna Jacopetti

Housekeeping:  Listserv guidelines are completed and approved.  A new campaign proposal form was created by Teri and will be posted on the listserv for input.

Wayne Morgenthaler combined mailing lists to publicize the Summit and put them on a spreadsheet.  Emerald will use this spreadsheet to store information. Current list has personal contact information (phone, address, email) Should these be omitted? Contact Emerald with your suggestions.

Mark Mortenson volunteered to handle the Twitter account.

Amy will help Emerald with the spreadsheet.  Amy needs access to the website draft. Emerald will follow up on this with Amy.

Amanda will use SoCoCAN! domain to set up a temporary web page for the new Summit.  To cover costs, all participating groups are asked to donate $25.00 a year if possible. Amanda will be coordinating this.

Summit Report: (Maya) Like a phoenix, the Summit is rising from the ashes. Increasing youth energy is a plus.  The Summit structure will be much the same, with focus on three areas : wild lands and agriculture, youth and climate action and urban issues. The presentations will take place on Zoom with breakout groups and in person presentations in natural settings.  Dates and details are still being determined. Second weekend in January is proposed. Please respond to the Doodle poll.

Maya also reported on recent article by Diane Feinstein.calling for support of S.4431, the “Emergency Wildfire and Public Safety Act of 2020. This Act is filled with misinformation on wildfire management and is opposed by Sierra Club, NRDC, National Parks Conservation Association and other environmental groups.  This bill “would increase wildfire risks to communities and ignore environmental laws. Rather than focusing on making our homes and communities safer, the bill would result in increased unregulated logging in areas far from communities.”  SoCoCAN! agreed to sign on to  Maya’s  and Jenny’s letter to the P.D. that we are quoting from.

Campaign Proposal

Teri Shore, Greenbelt Alliance

Teri is asking SoCoCAN! members to support passage of Measure W. renewing the urban growth boundary in Sonoma.  Other cities have renewed their commitments to protect open green space between urban areas. Establishing these boundaries recognizes that Sonoma County needs to reduce transportation emissions – our primary source of greenhouse gas – by building inside our existing footprints and limiting commute time.  A group in Sonoma feels that UGB is racist because it is blocking development of affordable housing outside the boundary. There are no specific projects threatened by Measure W.  If Measure W fails, then the Sonoma City Council will decide rather than the voters.  This puts intense lobbying pressure on the council and threatens land use policies throughout the county.

SoCoCAN! agreed to support Measure W and UGB for all principalities through letters to the editor, phone banking in Sonoma or conversations.  For more information, contact Teri Shore (tsh...@greenbelt.org)

Group Reports

Support for Measure DD, extension of the 25 cent sales tax, supporting bike paths, pothole repair, bus stops, etc.  Although the existing tax doesn’t expire until 2025, this measure is under attack by the North Bay Leadership Council, the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber of Commerce, and the North Coast Builders Exchange.  Besides providing essential transportation funds, this measure makes our county eligible to apply for state funds and to obtain grants for projects.  (This extra support has brought $5 for every $1 appropriated).

CAFF is concerned with development at the Sonoma Developmental Center property (90 acres) . and wants to see the County developing pastureland and wildlife access instead of building yet another tourist destination.

Occupy Sonoma County issued a solidarity statement in support of Black Lives Matter - Santa Rosa and is working on the IOLERO Campaign (Measure P) to provide objective, independent review of complaints against the Sonoma County Sheriff’s department.

Nicole informed us about Daily Acts Eco to School program which is a youth led project building art installations.  To learn more contact Nichole or Kevin at Daily Acts.

Meeting ended at 9:05 PM.
