Hi!

I'm creating a website tool for researchers. It would be most beneficial if I could import a user's (with their permission) Orcid ID, funding, employment, etc. from their profile. Is this possible with the Public API? Sorry for the basic question, however I don't understanding programming and have a hard time decoding the information regarding APIs on the webpage. I'm asking because I am about to specify what I want to be created to a web designer and need to know the capabilities.

A related question. If the above is possible, is it also possible to keep an "active link" between my website and the user's Orcid profile. I'll illustrate by an example: If a user adds for example additional funding in their Orcid profile, I'd like it to be automatically added to the user's profile in my website.

Many thanks in advance!

Hi,

Getting a user's ORCID iD and reading the public information from their record is possible with the public API. The technical workflow to get an ORCID iD is at http://members.orcid.org/api/tutorial-retrieve-orcid-id-curl-v12-and-earlier and once you have an ORCID iD the process to read the record is described at http://members.orcid.org/api/tutorial-retrieve-data-public-api-curl-12-and-earlier You might also want to take a look at the code examples for working with the API at http://members.orcid.org/api/code-examples as there are some great open source tools that you maybe able to set up to work with your website or your web designer may be able to tweak instead of needing to start from scratch.

For automatic updates from an ORCID record to your website, that's not something we offer with the ORCID API and getting a notification when an ORCID record changes is a benefit of premium membership. But you can continue to read the public ORCID record anytime you want and update your site if it changes. May tools check the status of an ORCID record anytime a user who has previously linked an ORCID iD signs into their site and updates the listed information at that point.

Good luck with getting your integration set up, and please let us know if you run into more questions we can help with.

Best,
-Catalina
