Sorry about the ad hoc communication. We are currently in firefighting mode.

Earlier today we started receiving distributed deep search queries from an anonymous Public API client. In order to keep our Registry and Members API up we’ve have temporarily taken down the Public API. As soon as we can isolate Public API traffic we’ll put it back up.

If you've been using https://pub.orcid.org/oauth/token for OAuth please switch to https://orcid.org/oauth/token. You only have to change the URL.

We expect to have the Public API back up in two hours, backed by a machine we hope will handle the additional load. If that isn't the case we'll also deploy code that will limit how far back into search results anonymous clients can crawl.

The Public API is back up.

However after examining traffic it's clear we'll need deploy some code to limit how far back into search results anonymous clients can crawl. We'll post more details about that later today.

Thanks,
Rob

Following up on Rob's earlier comment. We have now limited searches of the Public API done without credentials to only the first 10,000 results. Searches done without a token using a start param over 10,000 will return an error. This restriction does not affect searches on the Member API or Public API searches done with a token from a public client.

Best,
-Catalina
