Hi

I am very behind on the latest news with the Hebrew Morphology codes. Is this project still active? http://hb.openscriptures.org/OshbParse/

I remember seeing something somewhere about trying to get this data from another source, but I can't find any news about that. What's the latest?

Thanks :)
Ben

Hi Ben,

It seems our contributors have moved on to other projects.  It is a daunting task to parse the whole Hebrew bible, especially since we hadn't been able to implement a method to perpetuate the data already input, to provide hints or head starts on continued parsing.

One of our contributors, from Tyndale, was very interested in the parsing application itself, and in using the data we had at that point.  There may be developments there, in a substantially different form.  I have not remained in touch with him.

So far we have completed, verified and released Jonah and Ruth, with morphology.  On the site, though, there is much unheralded work, that I have been mining lately, to some extent.  The results are a little uneven, but still useful.

Peace,

David

The frustrating thing is that the data is already available out there, but it's not open source... sigh :)

We had some grand ideas and a pretty solid interface to collect at least some parsing data, but we have not had the response from contributors that we need to see the project through. I, for one, have become very busy. But that does not mean the project is totally out of my mind.

One piece of news that took the wind out of our sails was the release of someone else's data, but when I looked into it, it did not seem to meet the need we were trying to meet. So I think this project still has a role to play. But it will require a lot of work to see it completed.

In our first burst of work, what seemed to help the process was two or three individuals focused on a book (like Ruth and Jonah), cooperating to check each other's work. One lady parsed large books like Deuteronomy and Isaiah. Editing those would take two people coming alongside each other and working together to complete that. Perhaps that is the model we need to pursue so we see results.

We're focusing on the WIVU data (now ETCBC) (https://shebanq.ancient-data.org), since it's the only complete data set with an open license that we know of. We're looking at how the Bible Online Learner app is using this data; they have a GitHub repo at https://github.com/EzerIT/BibleOL

Hi David

Would it be possible to update the morphhb project with the data from the OshbParse project? I know that not all of it has been verified, but for me its better to have something to work with even if it's not correct.

If it's possible for me to do this myself I'm happy to do so :)

Thanks
Ben

Hi Ben,

The XML and SQL dumps of the database are at:

Those are automatically regenerated every 10 minutes.

I used the XML version to get the current release of the OSHB.  It's a huge file, and awkward to work with, but feel free to integrate it with the OSHB, if you want.

Peace,

David

Thanks. Is there a script from where you did it last time?

Nothing that would be immediately usable.

Hi David,

The data at http://hb.openscriptures.org/OSHB-Parsing-Latest.xml.gz contains morphology like

<field name="morph">HTd/Ncfsa</field>

Is there a description of the abbreviations like "HTd/Ncfsa" and the many others?

I am now integrating the data into Bibledit (bibledit.org) and am looking into ways to make the morphological parsings human readable.

Thanks!

That is from the work done here: http://hb.openscriptures.org/OshbParse/index.php

I think the best way to get to know these codes is to use the first link to parse a couple verses.
