Hi!
I work at sefaria.org and we are currently looking into getting some dictionary and lexical information into our system. We want to be able to map every word of the bible to the proper dictionary entry. So (lacking a good parsing system/algorithm for biblical Hebrew words) we are exploring the biblical texts and lexical information at openscriptures here to get the information.

First of all, it's great to find resources like this online!

Second, please excuse me if these questions have been asked before, I've spent some time looking through previous threads here but could not find a definitive answer.

I've noticed there is an xml version of Strong's concordance here: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/openscriptures/strongs/master/hebrew/StrongHebrewG.xml.

However it seems to have not been updated in recent years. So my questions regarding this are:

1. Is this still a good source for dictionary information? Especially If I combine the information in it with the tagged bible at https://github.com/openscriptures/morphhb/tree/master/wlc to get a definition for every word in the bible?

2. The <list> items in this xml are not Strong's. I've googled online and they perhaps come from some editing of BDB defintions originating at the Online Bible according to this: http://www.blbclassic.org/help/BLBLexicon.cfm. Does anyone here have any more exact information regarding the origin of these definitions? We would love to use them, but they do not seem to be BDB itself. They are used here as well http://ebible.org/study/.

3. Is there a more up-to -date version of this file somewhere? I can see at least one word (178 - אוב) where the definitions are nested incorrectly, but it seems to appear correctly in other places online.
3. Am I correct that the "exegesis" "explanation" and "translation" in the "note" tags are what contain text actually from Strong's?

OpenScriptures also has https://github.com/openscriptures/HebrewLexicon, which looks like an amazing and detailed resource.
1. Is this project still active?
2. The BDB is stated to be in a partial state. Is there an update on that? Can this also be used to generate proper dictionary look ups for biblical texts?

Lastly, if anyone here has recommendations for tools or resources pertaining to lexicons and dictionaries, we at Sefaria would love to hear about them.

Thank you!

Hi,

Thanks for your interest in our resources.  First of all, the Strong's dictionary you found has been significantly updated, and extended.  See
https://github.com/openscriptures/HebrewLexicon
Here you will find the updated Strong's, as well as an abridged Brown, Driver, Briggs, Hebrew Lexicon.  The Lexical Index is a summary listing of the two resources, indexed with augmented Strong numbers that connect to the WLC at MorphHB.  This is the closest we could come to assigning lexical information to the Hebrew Bible.

The older Strong's dictionary has been reduced back to little more than Strong's original content.  The losses to that file are more than made up for by the addition of BDB.  BDB is generally regarded as far more authoritative than Strong's.  Included in the repo is HebrewLexicon.pdf that attempts to explain these resources more fully.

Once you look over the newer files, if you have any questions on the format or content, please feel free to ask.

Peace,

David
