Hi everyone,

We have started to introduce video materials on our platform. We are currently coding them as H.264 but we would like to post H.265 encoded materials. Unfortunately, OO does not support it.

So I have a question, is it possible to implement the HEVC codec for OpenOLAT? And if so, how can this be done?

Thank you in advance for the information.

greetings
Jakub

Hi Jakub

We use the jCodec library to readout video metadata. This library does not support h265:

Right now we have no plans to change anything here.

Cheers
Florian

Hi Jakub

You need support of h265 not only in OpenOlat but of the browsers too. For the moment, it's very limited. Safari and Edge support h265 for the moment (and it seems that Edge based on Chromium doesn't support it). Firefox, Goggle Chrome and all Android devices don't support it. They will not profit from the advantages of it and OpenOlat will need to transcode it to h264. And loose quality in the process.

Cheers
Stéphane
