Hi,
I followed mostly the instructions given at

http://tirokartblog.wordpress.com/2011/01/21/kinect-working-on-ubuntu-10-10/

I am on Mac OS X 10.6.6 and using vmware to run Ubuntu 10.10. I heard
success stories from people but almost all of them were running ubuntu
natively. At least one user did use VMWare and also unable to get it
to work. Running any of the samples will give no error and just
hangs.

It is definitely attempting to communicate with the camera since
running the sample without Kinect plugged in will fail with errors and
exit 1 immediately. If the Kinect was plugged in, pulling it out can
also kill the hanging process.

I am not technical enough to debug the USB and lower level support
library. Anyone who figure this out pls kindly share solution.

Note: I have gotten OpenKinect's sample programs to run in the
VMware's Ubuntu 10.10 without any apparent problems (eg. the viewer,
tilt demo, etc).

kc,

I can confirm your story. I am trying the same thing (OpenNI + Kinect
on VMware running Ubuntu - mine is 10.04). I get the same result as
you do: no error, just hangs and does nothing.

Some people were saying that Kinect does not work on VMware, but I was
able to get the OpenNI samples to run on a VMware running XP. No
problem with that. However, could not yet find a problem or fix for
Ubuntu.
