Hi all,

In the spirit of experimentation and research, AU is offering it's first
official MOOC, Learning to Learn Online. The course starts Monday, March
9 and runs until April 13, 2015. In alignment with Athabasca
University’s mission to increase access and reduce barriers to
learning, this free course targets people interested in furthering their
education through online delivery. Project Manager JoAnne Murphy,
Project Assistant Iain McPherson, and Web-Media Analyst Dan Wilton
created a highly engaging online experience for the now 1500 registrants
who will begin the course. Dr. Caroline Park, Professor and Chair,
Graduate Programs, in the Faculty of Health Disciplines, is the lead
instructor for this MOOC. Iain McPherson, student in the M.Ed. (Distance
Education) is lead facilitator, supervising 10 roving facilitators who
act in support of novice online learners as they become accustomed with
this new environment. The course is hosted by Canvas Network; to view
the advertisement, or join in, see
https://www.canvas.net/browse/athabascauniversity/courses/learning-to-learn-online.

Please share with students or colleagues as you feel useful.

For more information, contact any member of the AU-MOOC Advisory group:
Derek Briton, Martha Cleveland-Innes, Mike Gismondi, Cindy Ives, Nancy
Parker, George Siemens, Veronica Thompson.

Thanks to Marti for initiating and leading this MOOC!

George Siemens

Hi Rory,

Thanks for sharing - this looks like a very interesting course which could be of benefit for future OERu learners.

Is the course openly licensed?  I am unable to check this because the course requires me to register in order to gain access to the materials.

Wayne,
No it is not fully open; it is behind a registration wall, but that is the best we could get at this stage in an "official" MOOC.  We'll keep working on the opennesss.

Hi Rory,

Thanks for the update.

AU is certainly not alone in offering "closed" MOOCs and to be fair, at most universities things move forward at "academic speed".  Nonetheless, from what I could read from the course description it looks like an excellent course.  The next step towards openness will be easier - its only a license switch ;-)

Just for the record – if it is closed, it is not a MOOC. J
