OCR Solution for LAMP?

Please excuse me in advance for any lack of knowledge on my part. If
you got to know me, you would find that there are a lot of things I
know little about.
However, I do know that I developed a web app for a local office
environment that stores and retrieves scanned documents. Each
document is labeled with keywords and info.
I was wondering if this project would help me scan these documents for
a variety of specific data. For instance, each document has a number
in a fairly consistent space. I would like to run ocr against this
space.
Is ocropus the right place for me?

Possibly. It's designed for LAMP and it is getting pretty easy to program in Python.
