Occupy Sonoma County has composed a letter that you can send to taqueria owners asking them to get GMOs out of their food.
Cut and paste the letter below, or write your own.
Dear Taqueria Owner,
I
am writing to let you know about concerns regarding genetically
modified organisms (GMOs) in the food that you are providing. GMO
products are currently banned in 26 countries and require labeling in 64
countries around the world due to environmental and health-related
concerns. Glyphosate,
the herbicide formulated for spraying on GMO crops, has been identified
as a possible carcinogen by the World Health Organization. Recent U.S.
polls have shown that over 90% of Americans are concerned about GMOs in
their food, and the majority of us want GMO products to be identified
on labels.
Moving to non-GMO ingredients would not be difficult or costly! Non-GMO
tortillas are readily available, including the organic tortillas
produced locally by La Tortilla Factory. Fast-food restaurants, such as
Chipotle Mexican Grill (a national chain), and Amy's Drive Thru in
Rohnert Park, promote non-GMO ingredients as a selling point to increase
sales. If you were to provide non-GMO tortillas and corn products it
would make your business more attractive to the growing number of
consumers who want to avoid GMOs in their diets. These consumers are
willing to pay slightly higher prices for healthier organic ingredients,
enabling you to offset your higher costs.
Many
taquerias have shifted away from GMO and pesticide-laden foods in favor
of non-GMO and organic foods. A taqueria with a non-GMO or organic
sign in their window is more popular now due to the growing awareness of
this health concern.
Please consider making non-GMO foods available in your taqueria.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
