weekly newsletter
October 20, 2014
According to 2010 data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, just over 90% of all U.S. soybeans, 90% of U.S. sugar beets, and 85% of U.S. corn crops are genetically modified. (Because many foods contain cottonseed oil, it's also worth noting that 90% of U.S. cotton crops are also genetically engineered.) This very high percentage of genetic engineering in the production of corn, soybeans and sugar beets greatly increases exposure to GE foods among U.S. consumers since processed components from these foods are found in so many processed and prepackaged products. While these are the top three GMO crops, which are fairly well recognized as such, what are some of the other foods that are GMO? To answer this question I want to share with you an excellent article from the Natural Society website. They have listed the following foods as the "top 10 worst GMO foods for your "do not eat" GMO foods list." Remember that foods that are certified USDA organic are not GMO.Visit the Natural Society Website and find out the reasons why these foods are on their list.

- Papayas
- Canola

Food of the Week . . . Pumpkin Seeds
Did you know that pumpkin seeds contain a unique diversity of antioxidants? Not only do pumpkin seeds contain conventional antioxidant vitamins like vitamin E, they provide this key antioxidant in a wide variety of forms. Alpha-tocopherol, gamma-tocopherol, delta-tocopherol, alpha-tocomonoenol and gamma-tocomonoenol are all forms of vitamin E found in pumpkin seeds. These last two forms have only recently been discovered, and are a topic of special interest in vitamin E research since their bioavailability may be greater than that of some other forms of vitamin E. Pumpkin seeds also contain well known mineral antioxidants like zinc and manganese. Plus, phenolic antioxidants are found in pumpkin seeds in a wide variety of forms. Interestingly, this diverse mixture of antioxidants in pumpkin seeds may endow them with antioxidant-related properties not found in many foods. Read more ... Pumpkin Seeds.
