Hey guys, our meeting is coming up next week, May 29th. We need a
speaker or two. Ideas: new things you've learned, projects you're
following, or showing off something you've created yourself.

Thanks.

In case you're curious, a "Freenode cloak" is a hostmask that hides your IP
address from everyone else. For example, when I run a "/whois foo" from my
IRC client, I might see something like this:

[foo] (~F...@95.211.13.35): Foo Bar

Instead, with an OALUG Freenode cloak (and identified to NickServ), you
would appear as:

[foo] (~Foo@oalug/member/foo): Foo Bar

Just a little something to tighten down security on the network. AFAIK,
Freenode is the only network that offers this.

Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend. Tomorrow night is City Council,
and I am trying to get on the agenda to get Utopia fiber approved in
Syracuse.

You been doing this kind of thing long? I'd like to see Utopia be put in more
parts of Layton (who is part of Utopia). I saw a Utopia truck the other day
around the corner from my house and I got pretty excited. But when I inquired
Utopia I was disappointed. It seems you have to be a new development to even
be considered. Any advice / tips you have from visiting with the City Council
or other things to be aware of would be greatly appreciated.

Layton city council is a joke...
I have been to several meetings not always for Utopia, but it is like
talking to the wall, in fact you would get more response out of the sheet
rock in your house. They nod Yes all the time, but when it comes down to
it, whatever they tell you, expect the opposite to happen. Alex Jensen the
city manager was the Chair of the Utopia project for a while and I could
never get anything out of him as to when Layton is going to be finished.
Here is another tid bit, when I was researching something else because
Utopia was so far out on the time line, I looked into Comcast and decided to
go with Comcast, but anything new Layton City will not approve any other
business to put anything in the ground except Utopia, they will not approve
a permit. I got this directly from the Comcast guy that does new
construction.
I actually have a new a new building development behind my house and Utopia
has put I their fiber to that building, and yes I was excited also, but they
will not run it up my street, they just put it along Fairfield.
So I guess don't hold your breath for Utopia, it is not going to be anytime
soon.

Thank you,
Shane Rose

The cable being pulled along through Layton around Gentile and other streets is actually Utopia.  I saw their trucks out there and checked out their site for news.  Looks like most of the backbone should be done in the next few months.  Then a couple of years to get most houses hooked up.  Here's to hoping...

I can get 100 meg connection at my house right now from Comcast, so I think I will stick with them.

I know you can get faster with Utopia, but they are still 2 years out…then you have to pay the $3000 fee to get it from the street to your house.

Can you restate this. I don't follow exactly what you are saying.

I was researching other ISP's when I found out about Comcast, Layton City
will not approve any permits for Comcast to do new buildings, only Utopia.
So Layton City will not allow any other ISP to pull fiber to new buildings.
Does that make more sense?

Unfortunately, the only thing available on my street is Century Link ADSL2,
which is 12 Mb down and .8 Mb up. It sucks. Our city council seems fairly
productive, and open to bringing in new residents and business into the
city, so having an open access infrastructire might be the right ticket.
But, we'll see.

No. I have not been doing this long. I have never done it before. However,
I have some material that will help, and I plan on going door-to-door
getting signatures on a petition, or calling people in the city.

I plan on using the following blog post as a guide to get going:

http://freeutopia.org/2011/05/12/how-to-bring-utopia-to-your-city-the-uia-way/

Tonight is all about getting on an agenda to present my case.

Yes. For second I thought you were saying they allowed everyone BUT Utopia to
pull the fiber (despite Layton being part of Utopia)

I imaging this is due in part because *anyone*, including Comcast can use
Utopia.

Just guessing but it probably has more to do with Utopia having almost
all of Layton under construction these days. It seems like you can't
turn around without seeing a directional boring machine or 5 in use. I
imagine its because there is already utility permits out to the Utopia
contractors that would conflict with routes Comcast would want to
take. Once work is done in a location of conflict they will probably
issue new permits. Just assuming here. I know Comcast ran new fiber to
my place of employment in Layton just last November.

Also if roads are crossed there are building moratoriums that
typically go from Oct 15 - April 15th.

As to the $3000 install price. If you take the 20 year payment plan
for about $25/month. For 50/50 (notice the upload) you can get from
Xmission for $35/month. So about $60/month and you get more upload
which for a business is going to be what you want. If you were to pay
the $3000 up front you would only be paying $35/month for that 50/50
service. There is an article that explains some about the install fee.

http://www.freeutopia.org/2011/05/23/further-utopia-installation-details

If you were buying Comcast business class services they would also
charge for build out of the fiber typically. That is unless they see a
financial benefit to installing the lines.

Sorry to reply to myself but I finally found another link I was going
to include. This is mostly just informational.

http://utopianet.org/uploads/files/Layton.pdf

The link above is to a fiber map from Utopia's RFP site. The area
where service is available is where it was built out 5+ years ago with
the original money. If you live in that area now you can get service
today. Section LA003 had 4-5 horizontal drilling machines pulling
large amounts of conduit through it in early March. So work is well
underway. I do also know there was ~15 week lead times on the large
count fiber that Utopia needed back at the first of the year.

The blue lines running North and South are the backbone fiber
connecting Layton to the other Utopia cities. As you can see from this
map there was no further backbone fiber run in the city with the
original money from nearly 10 years ago. Now the new money that Utopia
is using right now to build out various locations is from broadband
stimulus money provided by the federal government to connect schools,
hospitals, libraries, and other government buildings. By using this
money to pay for backbone build out (in addition to connection of
those buildings) the expensive part of the network is built.

How did you find this map? I've been trying to find something similar
for Orem :(. i'm beginning to think Utopia will never reach my side of
town.

Take 'Layton.pdf' off the URL and it lists all files in the folder.
Including 'Orem.pdf'.

The map was listed as part of a RFP for fiber laying services a year
or so ago. The map represents the mode (overhead vs in the ground) in
which they will be possibly installed. So this really is just for
those responding to the RFP/RFB they had out at the time. It doesn't
represent any kind of build out promise or anything of that nature.

Like Brandon mentioned just replace the city name with the one you want.
