Some of you are aware of this already, and apologies to the rest of the group for not getting this mentioned on here sooner.

I'm happy to announce we are buying a Bridgeport Mill for £240!
Now this a large tool and investment for the hackspace. But a great addition to our metal working facilities.

Normally such a large tool purchase would go to the membership first, but this was such a good deal the board agreed we should just go for it.

These machine's usually go on ebay for anything between £700-£2,000.
It will need some parts to get fully running and its is going to take some money to get it over to the hackspace, the machine is currently in Loughborough.

We were originally offered second dib's on this, but the other interested buyer has now dropped out and I confirmed we are still interested this afternoon.

We now need to arrange transport.
In one lump the mill weighs about 1 ton.
I can break this down in several part but they will still weigh quite a bit.
Im confident that it can be moved with a pallet truck, a Luton van with tail lift, and some burley hackers.

The floor will be fine, we may mount the Bridgeport on some joists/board to spread the load if need.
I'm going to peak under the floor boards on sunday to confirm the building construction, I think its timber joists over concrete joist

I have a few machine movers to contact but if prices are to high we will go with hiring a lunton and pallet truck
If we are moving it our selves I would like to arrange collection for Saturday 8th December.
Joe you said you would be happy to help with van hire? I suspect it's going to have to be a weekend hire, collecting the van Sat morning and return monday morning as i doubt we could get a van back for a return time of 1pm

Im only free in the morning that weekend.
The following saturday I can help all day.

I get discount with enterprise, but they dont do luton vans.

Shopping around it looks like it'll cost us around £70-80 for day hire or £200 for the weekend for a luton with lift.
Plus £200 deposit.

Where is it now? Could we do an early start and get it shifted in a morning?

Joe
I was looking at northgate for hire. They are open Saturday's 8:30 till 12:00

Mill is in Loughborough just off a60 google says 15miles 30mins ish

Problem is i'm not sure how long it going to take to disassemble.

Rough time estimate for a day would be
10 mins to collect van (paperwork, if we're outside there door for 8:30)
35 mins to get to Loughborough
??? mins dissemble and loading
35 mins to hackspace
20 mins unloading
20 mins to return van
15 mins before van hire closes(for good measure)

2:15 hours plus dismantle/loading
Oh and assuming we can hire pallet truck form northgate and don't have to go trekking elsewhere.

Cutting it find on the 3.5 hour hire window gives 45 mins to dismantle/load.

I am at London Hackspace next Saturday. Your times look VERY optimistic Matt, I am the most positive person and I still think not doable in the times you have quoted.
Most hire firms let you return the van outside the opening hours, is that not the case here?

Matt Lloyd

unread,
Dec 1, 2012, 2:55:44 AM12/1/12

Yes they were my best case times.
Hence my original plan was a weekend hire, where we collect van Saturday morning have all day Saturday to dismantle if need and could offload Sunday if needed.

We could collect van late Friday and return Saturday and still only be a 1 day hire but still close on times.

I don't think anyone allows out of hours return these days.

Form northgate for Luton with tail lift:-
One day hire £65
Weekend hire £130
Northgate need a few days notice for van hire, so I would like to get things arranged early in the week.

Can anyone help with the hire and driving? I know it's a pain having to park up a van over the weekend and return Monday morning.

I spoke to a machine moving company and they wanted £450!! so really want to move this with hackspace members help.

Just in case people are holding back due to licences.

You can drive a 3.5t Luton box van (with lift) on a standard car driving licence. If you passed before 1997 you can also drive up to 7.5t.

There must be someone else who can drive?

It would be a massive shame to leave it outside for another week or spend all that money on a mover.

Could you disassemble earlier in the week, before hiring the van ? It would give you more time on the day, and also give you the chance to plan the actual loading (that 375kg column's got to be moved to the tail lift somehow).

I'm told its currently sat on a pallet outside, I intend to load the other bits onto pallets as it broken down, then they can be just rolled on and off the tail lift.
I might be able to get Thu or Fri off work but would still need another 2/3 people to help with the heavy lifting as we dismantle it.

The reason I'm not jumping forward is because:

1. I've lost (as in stolen) my photo park of my licence making hire tricky until its replaced

2. I'm on a training course in Birmingham till the 7th.

I'll get the paperwork for a replacement licence ASAP but feat it won't be soon enough.

I'm free to do lifting just about any day after next Thursday. I do have a drivers license too, though haven't driven in a very long time, and nothing larger than a transit van. I'd be very wary of driving a Luton.

Given how cheaply we're getting the mill, I don't think an extra day or so of van hire is that big an issue.

Actually, is a Luton-bodied 35cwt the best vehicle to use?

Does anyone have contacts at a builders' merchants?

Could one of their trucks with a hiab lift (think 1tonne bags of gravel / sand) be hired with a driver to pick up and drop (not literally!) off at the space?

Ok might have a different plan just been in touch with a different machine movers.

Thanks to artag for the pointer.
Quick quote was £160 to move the machine

This would be moved in one lump and we could dismantle at the space and move upstairs at our leisure.

Yes £160 to get it inside the bizspace loading bay on the opposite corner of the building.

Weekend van was £130 plus fuel.
This would may require one or two of us to supervise loading and unloading. But we can dismantle close to home and our tools.

I've had a bit of experience with moving big machines, and I wouldn't underestimated the difficulty. A Hiab lorry is by far the best bet.

If you're going to try and strip it down, it may not be as simple as it sounds. A couple of strong people can just about manage 75kg safely, but you might struggle to get more than that around some of the parts, especially inside the van. I'd suggest taking an engine crane and loads of ratchet straps. Just getting the motor off the top looks tricky - 35-50kg at head height??

Machine skates also exist for a purpose - can anybody borrow some? - they may come in useful. (Mine are available (and a crane) but they're in Grantham and I won't be over until the 9th.)

Another way of doing this is to lean the mill into the back of the van on a pallet, then lift the bottom end up with a crane. The van will take most of the weight. (I've moved 300kg machines this way by myself.) Sliding it into/out of the van can be done with some ropes and teamwork, though a forklift is better. Some big levers and rollers would also be useful.

If you can delay a week I can bring over some equipment next Sunday.

I can borrow a large van (a Peugeot Boxer) from work for a weekend if
said van is available (I'd need to book it), and just have to
reimburse fuel at a rate of 15p/mile, but it won't be one with a tail
lift.

I don't know if that's any good to you.

Thanks to Steve the mover the head and turret has been lifted of in one piece and that's saved a lot of lifting.

The Bridgeport is now in the hackspace, currently there are a lot of bit floating around, Ill get them tidied away a little later.
Big thanks to everyone that helped even if you just stopped by and watched.
Getting it in was actually a lot easier that we expected.

This goes with out saying but please DO NOT HACK. I have a hole bunch of pots and tub with nut a bolts in that I need to label up, if they get mixed up its going to be fun putting it back together.

Ill get pics up on flickr at some point and will try to do a blog post.

We did end up going out and buying a set of 4 gear puller's for the hack space, cost about £35, but they will going into the tool collection, and will be used as I rebuild the mill.
