Hi All,

I'd like to organise an Open Day at the Hackspace, but need some help!

We've not had an Open Day for quite sometime, but membership often get messages from people interested in joining who can't make a Wednesday Open Night.
I think it would also be good for members to meet other members and see what they are working on or have made at the space.

I'm proposing Sat 20 July, 11:00 am to 4:00pm

Could you help with this?

Have you got a project you can show?
- Can be complete or in progress, if so please turn up and show what you've done or are working on.
- It would be great to show the diversity of the space and have all areas represented, i.e. textiles, art/craft, woodwork, metalwork, laser, electronics, etc.

Is there an activity you could perhaps run for visitors to do?
- At Open Days in the past we have done things like: LED badge soldering, customised laser cut boxes, a short Arduino workshop
- This could be a chargeable activity

Could you give tours to visitors?
- The membership team can provide training on what we cover on a Wed night tour

Can you help with promoting this event?
- Tell family, friends, work colleagues
- Perhaps put up a poster at work or other clubs / societies, or share on social media?

Regards,
Ian

Hi Ian,

I am interested, and for once not at work!

Project wise I don't do that many exciting things but I do have a fair bit of experience on a silhouette cutter and heat press if doing logos and personalised garments would be interesting to visitors.

My other main area of interest is solar power but not sure that would translate to an indoor activity. Only thing I can think of of the top of my head is a multi stage project using a little bit of knowledge at different work stations to build a little power bank? Might be a bit ambitious.

Cheers

Jim

I'm in, both for tours and bringing in the 3D Printer that was part made at the Hackspace. Could also possibly run a 3D Printing Workshop?

Cheers,

Having a 3D printer running that’s been made (or parts made) at the space sounds ideal. Thanks Ax

Sounds great, I'm interested.

I can run my robot table football game if there is space (it takes up a large table) and subject to battery life. It has parts made on the Hackspace laser cutter and the Denford CNC lathe, along with 3D printed parts, crochet parts, and electronics that were prototyped in the Hackspace.

Sounds like it's gonna be fun but I'm off on holiday on the 20th so won't be around.

If anyone wants to do some 3D scanning with the Kinect camera, I can show you how it's done? Could work as a workshop type activity potentially.

Hi Ian,
If someone else could share, perhaps something like an hour on and an hour off, or at least relief for loo and lunch breaks, then I would he happy to do some demos on the laser.
Does anyone have any nice designs we could laser cut - something like a small butterfly or dragonfly, or something else small and pretty that we could cut in MDF and give to people if they have watched a demo?
I could also bring a building I have laser cut, but I would not like to leave it around without someone to keep an eye on it during breaks, as it is several weeks work.

Hey Ian

I would love to help! Arthur, I definitely have some little designs that could easily be made into etchings or cuts on the laser cutter.

If the screen printing stuff is all set up by then I could show people how to print little hackspace bags or flyers.

Sarah.

Hey Ian,
This is a great plan.
I'm interested and available and have put it in my diary.
I'm happy to help run 'learn to solder' workshops with the badges we have (if we have any left?).
I'll check what we have and go from there.

Would be good to get it advertised well, maybe a mention in Leftlion - they always advertise the open night.

That would be great.
What format are your designs in?
I normally use .dxf drawings, but I think you can use Inkscape files and possible others?

I save them down as flat JPEGS and then convert them on the PC when I get to hackspace.

Hi

Open day is a great idea!

I would be happy to help out with the laser and I am sure I also have some laser designs that could be part of a range of options visitors could pick from and have cut before their very eyes (for a small amount which goes to the space).

It would be nice to collaborate with others on this, and to perhaps create a folder on the laser pc with a catalogue of suitable designs donated by hackspace peeps :) ).

I've also got some scrap materials (bits of nice ply or perspex that I typically save for the laser inductions) that would be suitable for cutting small items from (can also save/salvage more between now and then).

I could bring some of the things that I've made in the space and am happy to talk to people about, if there are enough lasery peeps already.

I'm thinking about the feasibility of running mini workshops more around art and craft stuff too, but am having more of a think about this first as it would need to be of a relatively short duration, and the visitors would ideally take away a thing they had made.

hmmm....

Sounds a great idea. If we have an <<open day>> folder then we can all access this.
Where are the H key ring fobs filed as they would not use much material and do not take too long to engrave?
Perhaps one of the laser team could book a session to give the laser a clean the previous evening so that it is working well on the Saturday.

Thanks again for all the offers of help with organising this.

I've started creating a wiki page for the day:  https://wiki.nottinghack.org.uk/wiki/Open_Day_2019

Please feel free to add to this, and if I've got anything is incorrectly please edit or drop me a message.

I've suggested locations for each activity, but again please edit / update as required.

Let’s give the Nottingham Post a heads up, as well as Univ Nott and NTU and all of the other orgs that might cross-link. I’m not the PR expert but the basics are pretty straightforward

To do this, we will need to have a firm date.

Hi Ian,

I would like to offer to help out on the day. I can assist on the laser cutter as mentioned by Arthur that would need some sort of shift pattern to allow for loo brakes etc. I can also help out in other areas as seems fit. I also make a lot of miniature stuff for table top war-gaming and I can show off some of those small items that I make.

May I suggest (unless already in hand) nearer the time that there is a meeting so there is some co-ordination as to who is doing what/when and maybe even formulate some sort of timetable etc so we dont just turn up on the day and make a mess of what is supposed to be a Hackspace promo event. Regarding possible advertising the event a separate meeting on that could be held sooner as we need the time to get the message out there.

Hi Edward,
Thanks for offering to share time on the laser with me.  I thought to get there by 9.30 to set up.
We were chatting about this last night and thought it might be good to have a table to show what members have made on the laser (I remember someone does card lamp shades and someone else leather watch straps.  Would they be willing to display these?).
Possibly some small samples so that people could choose something they like and we could cut it for them.  (Hackspace coin, key fob, butterfly...). When we have downloaded the chosen item they could press the START button!
I'm away until 5 June, but can be available all day and will fit in with yourself or anyone else helping

Hi Everyone

I've made a folder on the laser pc, it's in Jarvis and is called #Nottinghack OPEN DAY 2019.

I've put the first design in as an ECP file (it's a small phone stand, cuts out of about 12x9 cm of 6mm ply or 5mm perspex), the design for both materials is set up and ready to be cut.

I intend to do more designs and add them in as I go, and I know there are other peeps here who want to do the same.

It's gonna be great if visitors can choose from a range of little things to have cut, and I think this could be quite profitable for the space if we charge say £2 for small things like keyrings (do we need to get the metal ring things for these???) and £3 to £5 for bigger things, depending on size and complexity of cut...  and we'd need a display of pre-cut examples (doubling as ready-made, buy here ???)

I'd welcome your thoughts on all of this...

I've added a butterfly to the folder which looks quite good even when cut in corrugated card, so not expensive to give to people.
The only thing is that there is a square box around it which just wastes space, so if anyone knows how to edit this to remove the box that would be great.
I was talking to Dave who does the nice laser cut corrugated card lampshades and he would be happy to bring some of these along to the open day.  I just need to send him a reminder nearer the date.

I know how to edit stuff and will have a look when next lasering - was that an example one on the table next to the laser pc? if so, it looks good and could also be incorporated into keyrings and other things as, even the phone stand, with a little tweaking.

Good stuff!!!!!

I've had a look at the file, copied it over to an .svg, so it can be used for a keyring design and other designs in the catalogue of Open Day offerings :)

Once I've sorted that, the files will be in the Open Day folder.

I am a new member and have been having problems messaging on here, so apologies if you have already heard from me. I am keen to talk over any way I could help on the open day. Please contact me. Derek

As suggested by another member, I've set up a slack channel #open_day_2019 for any discussions regarding the forthcoming Open Day.

If you are not yet on slack you can join at:   http://slack.nottinghack.org.uk/

Please mention the Open Day on 20th July 11:00am to 4:00pm to friends, family, work colleagues, etc. who may be interested.

If you need a poster to put up, it can be downloaded here: https://wiki.nottinghack.org.uk/images/e/e2/OpenDayJuly2019.pdf

The event is now on Eventbrite and Left Lion, and should appear on Ask Lion once approved.

Does anyone know of other places we can advertise and promote it for free?

Also, can I suggest we have a cleaning / tidy up day on Sunday 14th July?

Is there anywhere free to park not too far from Hackspace?  For the open day I will have to bring my car to drop some things off at the space.  I can then drive somewhere else, but don't really want to pay to park all day and. anyway, I think the local meters have a limit on how long I can stay.
Thanks, Arthur

Hi,

As far as I'm aware lidl uses camera so will just post you out a 'fine'

On Stonebridge St nearby it's £2 to park all day on street. Have to pay via phone though as no machines.

Just a reminder about the Open Day on Saturday.

I will be there from 10:00am to help with setting up and we are open to visitors from 11:00am to 4:00pm.

We have a list of activities that people have offered to run here: https://wiki.nottinghack.org.uk/wiki/Open_Day_2019
If anything needs changing for any reason, please update the wiki, or drop me a message and I'll do the update.
We also have the #open_day_2019 channel in slack for any discussions.

I've asked the comms team to give another push on social media. Please share the posts and let family, friends, work colleagues know.

Please come along and have a look around, and if you have a project you are working on or have worked on, please bring it along to show to other visitors.

Hi Ian,
I aim to be there from 10:00.
If we have lots of people on the laser I am happy to help out anywhere else in the space for part of the day.
I have put a posting on the Gauge O Guild (model railway) web site and also circulated details to friends who might be interested.
See you Saturday.
Arthur

If anyone can also get hold of blue roll before tomorrow I think we are running desperately low.
Also we have a nice new kettle in the kitchen in time for open day as the last one was a fire hazard.

Sorry I won't be there in person! I hope it goes really well :)

Big thanks to Ian for organising the open day.
We seemed to have quite a lot of people looking round and they were interested in the demos we organised.
Not sure how many will convert into new members, but the day was also a great chance to meet and talk to other members and see what others do at the Space.
Well worth it and thanks for the biccies!
Arthur

Definitely! It was great to see what everyone's been up to and what the hackspace can create.

Thanks to Ian for organising and to everyone else for showcasing their work.

I would like to add thanks, Ian and Co.
Was unable to commit but got family to visit.  They were impressed.
Well done.

Thanks to every one who helped today, whether that was running one of the activities, giving tours, being there working on a project, or just being around to talk to visitors.

I think it was a success. We had a good number of visitors and when I checked with Matt towards the end of the day we had had 18 people leave their email address, but there may have been a few more after this.

Three people have already gone on to submit, and have their contact details approved, and have now been sent the details to set up a standing order.

Hopefully everyone enjoyed it, I did, and hopefully we will get a few more members.

Thanks again,

Ian

Thank for organizing it Ian and for everyone else who turned up, it was nice to chat with some members I already knew as well as others I didn't know before today.
