Getting playlist order from iTunes

Hi!

I was wondering if there's a way to hack in the order of the playlist from iTunes. I use a smart playlist, sorted by date added (newest first), and I use Notpod to sync a USB device that goes into my car stereo. The stereo can't use playlists, and it goes through the items in a folder alphabetically, so if I want to listen to a new song I just downloaded, I have to find it manually.

So I was wondering if perhaps we could create a custom sync pattern which would append a number to the beginning of the track name, in order to fool the stereo into following my desired order. Is it possible to get this information from iTunes? For example, if my playlist looks like this:

1. Blue Skies
2. Home
3. Without

...then the sync pattern would rename those to "001 - Blue Skies," "003 Without", and "002 Home" so that when I play them on the stereo, it follows the same order as my playlist.

Note that I'm not talking about the track number; I mean the playlist ordering. I realize this is a very specific request, but if there's a way to get this info from iTunes, I'm comfortable with editing the code myself. I'd appreciate a nudge in the right direction!

this could be interesting as a "Car sync pattern". I'll make sure to keep it on my list. Feel free to have a go at the code and implement yourself - I am happy to merge useful pull requests!
