On 7/31/19 at 11:18a.m., the Newton Police Department received numerous 9-1-1 calls reporting a three car motor vehicle accident with a possible roll-over at the intersection of Sparta Avenue, Sussex Street, and Diller Avenue.

Upon arrival, investigation revealed that Mackenzie Kratzsch, age 23 of Newton, was traveling north on Sussex Street in a 2017 Kia Sorento and failed to stop for the red light causing her to collide with a 2013 Dodge Ram being driven by Joseph DeLuca, age 37 of Vernon who was traveling east on Sparta Avenue.

The force of the collision caused DeLuca's vehicle to spin into the westbound lane of Sparta Avenue, overturn, and strike a 2019 Kia Niro that was traveling west on Sparta Avenue.  This vehicle was driven by Thomas Marchese, age 48, of Stillwater.

DeLuca’s passenger, Ian Wolverton, age 28 of Vernon was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be removed by the Newton Fire Department.

All of the vehicles were removed from the scene by Newton Gulf.

Kratzsch was issued a summons for the following:

39:8-1   Failure to Observe Traffic Signal

The accident resulted in Sparta Avenue being closed for approximately 1 hour.

Officers involved:

Ptl. John Flanagan, Sgt.Thomas Muller, Ptl. Anthony Keiling, Ofc. Judy Torres and S/O Raul Couce.
