Pedestrian Struck by Motor Vehicle

On 1/8/18 at 11:15a.m., Newton Police received  a report of a motor vehicle striking a pedestrian in the parking lot of the Newton Shop-Rite supermarket.

 

Upon arrival, investigation revealed that a 2015 Honda CRV being operated by Beverly Barney of Stillwater, age 70, was making a left hand turn within the parking lot of the Newton Shop-Rite when she failed to observe a pedestrian, Joanne Francis, age 44, of Rockaway, NJ to be present within a crosswalk near the front of the store.   As a result, Barney struck Francis with her vehicle resulting in her complaining of back pain.  

 

Atlantic Ambulance and Newton First Aid Squad both responded to the scene.  Pedestrian was transported to Newton Medical Center by Atlantic EMS.

 

Barney was issued for the following:

39:4-97    Careless Driving

 

At the time of the incident, Francis was present within a private property marked (dark blue) pedestrian striped area.  Same was covered in salt and barely visible.  Also present was a reflective pedestrian crossing sign.
