On 11/10/18 at 4:27a.m., Newton Police responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a vehicle into a utility pole in the area of Woodside Avenue between Nelson Street and Lawnwood Avenue.


Upon arrival, patrols found a pole had been struck and the vehicle involved was disabled a short distance away on the side of the road.  Subsequent investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle, Paul C. Zorn III, age 23, of Port Jervis, NY was under the influence and had reportedly looked down at his cell phone and traveled into the opposite lane of travel before striking the pole and coming to a rest.  

Zorn’s vehicle sustained significant damage and he had a complaint of pain to his left arm but refused treatment. 


JCP&L, Andover Twp. Police and the Sussex County Diversion Team responded to the scene to assist.  Approximately 600 JCP&L customers were without power for a few hours while crews secured and repaired the damaged pole and wires. 


As a result, Zorn was charged with the following before being released.
39:4-50          Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated

39:4-50g(1)   Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated Within A School Zone

39:4-51b       Operating a Motor Vehicle With An Open Container of Alcohol

39:4-97         Careless Driving

39:4-97.3      Use of Cellular Telephone While Driving Prohibited

39:4-88          Failure to Obey Marked Lanes

39:3-36          Failure to Notify of Complete Change of Address

 

Case pending an 11/20/18 appearance in Newton Municipal Court.
