Yea, i have noticed that too! I wasnt going to bid on it anyway, because it would be way too expensive for me.

Nahh. That's where buyer protection comes in. You just get to stew a little until your money comes back.
The images are fresh, and not lifted from others. I'd be more concerned with adequate packing, as the crate they're in are not the individual RFT boxes they originally shipped in.
Anyone remember back when these were available for $20 each from Jan? :)  Back before the world warmed up to the familiar glow.

Now even the inverted 2 nixski tubes are selling for that.

O yea, i have two Z568M (the darker coating version) with the original RFT boxes. Do you know if they were ever sold in bigger lots originaly?

I would be a bit suspicious too, I've never seen a seller from
Bulgaria offer free shipping. :) Zero feedback is a red flag as well.

I guess we'll all have to wait and see. My bet if the auction goes
'til the end, it will go north of $2K

I'm with Greg on the final bid assessment. Looks like they're all from the same lot, but still a crapshoot as far as whether or not they work. Looks like this guy joined Ebay just sell these! Hmmm...

As Jeff will likely not be surprised, I'd like to make a move on these tubes but I also don't want to unnecessarily compete against folks here, so if someone's been thinking about bidding, let me know and I'll step aside or something.

Wayne

...I am suspicious of that as well… but I would be bidding and paying with a credit card and was hoping that between that and ebay buyer protection that it would work out.

What do y'all think about that?

Don't you just hate it when someone joins ebay just to sell a single higher dollar item which is out of the country and has a strong understanding of the language?

I would also consider buying the tubes knowing that I could get my money back from ebay/paypal; however, I don't want to deal with the 1-2month process in doing so.

Good luck to the winner and please keep us updated.

Michail

As I understood, there were many thousands of these Z568's rotting away in a former GDR warehouse. Jan bought the lot. Along with other types.
If Jan is here, he may be able to elaborate about it.
I sampled a few from Jan in early '02, then designed a couple of clocks and kits around them. They went viral.
The Z568's were shipped in by the hundreds at a time, individually box, wrapped in corrugated paper and tissue.

I have many sealed cardboard boxes of RFT Z570's to this day, in 200ct boxes, and dated 1969. Possibly acquired from the same source. 45yr old communist time capsules :)

Regards, Jeff

It could be that the one person who finally got it was jsut "hired" to do the bidding. It looks suspicious to me, because I think it is not very clever to bid such high amounts over and over again...

I knew it was interesting auction, but i didnt expected it by any means to sell for this much! And whats more interesting is, that there was this auction couple days ago wich didng go nearly as high! http://www.ebay.com/itm/271136596338?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2648

All bidders seem to be ok, bidding on collectibles. The winner is probably from Germany - bidding in german categories. The only suspicious thing here is that two high bids uses the same pattern, $X.150, but that could be just a strategy known among experienced ebay users..

Absolutely unbelievable!! And I thought $100 a piece for these things 2 years ago was ridiculous!

The auction you mention below is for two 7037's and this still seems to be about the norm for these American made beauties. A nice tube, but no where near as pretty as the 568.

I agree: The Z568M is a very pretty tube. But I severely doubt that this market price is realistic... It has to be some kind of monkey business, otherwise I really have to reconsider my beliefs ;-))

@ Dalibor: $500 per tube is quite nice ;-)

The seller name in pidgin-German means "Have nothing" :-)

And many Bulgarians speak German...

$5150 was my bid -- because I knew I was crazy to be bidding over $5k for only 9 tubes. CA penal code for crazy person is 5150 and yes I do overbid by more than a dollar when trying to win auctions.

Probably I am wrong, but I think I have seen those tubes before on a Polish auction server.... I suggest anybody who wants to bid to ask the seller if the tubes were directly soldered before.

O yeah, you are right! They are the exact same tumes, even the numbers match. You can see the original auction here: http://allegro.pl/wielki-wyswietlacz-4-x-nixie-z568m-i2822809905.html
