Surviving
the Narcissist: Defending Against
Mayhem
Sam
Vaknin,
PhD.
Relationships
with narcissists are fraught with trauma,
difficulties, and even dangers. Sam Vaknin, a
pioneer in the work on narcissistic abuse (a term
he coined) will guide you through the delicate art
of surviving such a dysfunctional environment.
Whether you choose to remain in a relationship
with the narcissist – or to call it a day, there
are a few things you should be aware of and do,
says Sam.
First,
you need to learn how to get rid of malignant
optimism and self-delusions: rescue fantasies, the
erroneous belief that love cures all, that
narcissists can be healed. You also need to learn
how to abandon the doomed relationship with
minimal damage to yourself and your loved ones;
how to not get drawn back into the addictive web
of deceit and fantasy, the shared psychosis
that is the dance macabre of a relationship with
the narcissist. How not to re-enter la-la
land.
Leaving
the narcissist behind you is only half the story –
and it is the easiest half by far. How to cope
with the whirlwind of resulting emotions: loss,
rage, grief, hate, vindictiveness, missing him,
and the lack of closure? Moving on is a process.
It requires learning, grieving, forgetting,
forgiving (especially yourself). Sam will get you
acquainted with all these phases of mourning and
re-emerging into life.
Many
survivors ask whether they can remain friends with
the narcissist. “Can I obtain closure in the wake
of my dysfunctional relationship with him?” – they
want to know – “Should I forgive him?” Sam’s
answers to these questions are based on 20 years
of work with tens of thousands of victims and
survivors throughout the
world.
Sometimes,
the narcissist is an integral part of your life,
an unavoidable fact. How to manage situations when
you cannot avoid the narcissist (cannot maintain
“no contact”)? When you are colleagues at work,
parents to common children, members of the same
family? The training finishes with practical tips
and advice related to these
issues.
Sam
says: “The Familiar is tempting – but, it is a
trap. The Unknown is terrifying – but, it holds a
promise. Your only chance at happiness, even
survival, is to move
on.” |
Codependency
Addiction:
The
Compulsive Attraction to
Narcissists
Ross
Rosenberg, M.Ed., LCPC, CADC,
CSAT
Ross
Rosenberg, a codependency and addictions expert,
will introduce his codependency addiction model
and outline treatment objectives and protocols.
His “codependency addiction” concept picks up
where his breakthrough book, The Human Magnet
Syndrome, left off. Not only are codependents
reflexively and irresistibly attracted to
pathological narcissists, but they are also driven
and controlled by a powerful and insidious
addiction.
Codependency
addiction manifests as a repetitive and compulsive
pattern of relationships with pathologically
narcissistic lovers. Short or long-term
relationships with narcissists, their drug of
choice, create temporary or fleeting moments of
euphoria and feelings of relational perfection.
Like a drug addiction, codependents seek to
replicate the initial blissful experience of
connection and emotional fulfillment. Sadly, like
any drug or process addiction, the codependent
cannot control the “drug” or narcissist who, by
their very nature, cannot be controlled. Despite
chronic disappointments, broken promises to self
and others, and a cascade of negative
consequences, codependents continue their cycle of
personal and relational
self-destruction.
The
number one and most excruciatingly painful
withdrawal symptom is pathological loneliness.
This form of loneliness is reported to be as
agonizing as any other chemical addiction
withdrawal symptom. Codependency addiction and its
unique withdrawal symptoms can also be explained
by basic neurophysiology and
bio-chemistry. |
