Hi,

You just have to type "file:" before your link, and everything works fine.
like this:

file:evernote:///view/10876222/s96/b791b5bc-551a-4498-a1b2

I used MLO 3x for a while but switched to Nirvana mainly because of the problems with sync to other devices, and some other issues. Your new version looks very promising, and am considering to go back to MLO, but there is one big function (but so easy to fix) that makes MLO "useless" for me.

I guess that many of the MLO users also use Evernote to keep their project information, files and references.  In Evernote you can make note links, but they don't work in MLO. (those: "evernote:///view/10876222/s96/b791b5bc-551a-4498-a1b2….)

Nirvana has a very simple but still very effective way to handle a use of those programs in combination, by allowing Evernote links. And it works great! It must be very very simple to make this links work, right?!

If you take a look at Nirvana you will see, that they don't have a fancy integration with Evernote, still it's so easy to use in combination. The cool thing is that these note links also works in IOS, without any adjustments. The link will take you to the Evernote page as long as you have the Software or app installed.

So you don't need tag-sync or APIs to make it possible to use Evernote and MLO effectively together, just the links will do. You could of course boost it by make an Evernote-link-attribute for tasks/projects you can past the link into, and have a evernote-link icon. It will make it more visually, but you don't have to.

As long as I have all my information in Evernote, I can never convert to a task management system that doesn't have this function. I keep all my information in Evernote, and I make a Evernote note for every project I need detailed information around, and links to other notes references.

Hope you are agree, so I  can go back to MLO again J

I can confirm that this evernote link works.   I use the same method for onenote and use an autohotkey script that automatically prefixes the syntax:

^+e::
  clipboard = <file:%clipboard%>
  Send ^v
  return

When I press ctrl-shift-E, it pastes the proper link format into MLO for either program.

Hi, Lars. I don’t imagine the developers feel that bad about their functionality as the “URL” version of Evernote link works just fine. Not only does it function nicely, but also it’s portable, meaning that if I create the link on Windows I can reference it on my mobile, and I can create the link from MLO to Evernote on mobile and reference it on Windows, none of which would ever work with a file:/ based link no matter what was done on the MLO side to accommodate it.

If you have _not_ tried this, here are the steps:

1.       On Windows Evernote, select a note

2.       Select “copy note URL to clipboard” from the Evernote Share menu

3.       Paste it into the note of an MLO task.

That’s it, all done.

PS the security’s not that great on the Evernote.com side, but I for one don’t view that as an MLO problem.

OK, so there is a hack for this. I tried, but it didn't work for me. When I click on the link get an error message, because MLO is adding a path before (X:...) I'm sure there is a hack for this as well...

Thanks for helping, but please tell me:.For how long have you been doing this hack. Months? Years?

Autohotkey script? Seriously? I have to say that it's disappointing that the developer doesn't fix issues like this, but leave you with hacks. Don’t feel so tempted to convert to MLO anymore. Sorry.

Thanks for sharing the exact steps because I've never gotten around to playing with this. Two comments:

–apparently my Evernote Windows is not set to notify of new updates automatically. I apparently had a very old version.  I had the darndest time finding the share menu -- it is only in the newer version, where it is on the context menu for a note.

–Now I finally get that there is a difference between copying a note link, which will link to the local version (if you put file: in front of it) and  copying the note URL to the clipboard, which will lead to the web version.

Wow, thanks Olivier. This is also the missing piece in getting the
Thunderlink extension working for Thunderbird email. Now I can link to
individual email messages. You've no idea how many different
combinations of "file", colons and forward-slashes I'd tried before
giving up.

Chris: thanks for mentioning Thunderlink. The one thing keeping me from
switching my email from Outlook to Thunderbird is the links from MLO to
Outlook. When I drag an email from Outlook and drop it on MLO, it creates a
task with the email body in the task note, and an embedded link. When I open
the task and click the link, Outlook opens the original email. Does anything
happen when you drag a task from Thunderbird (with Thunderlink installed)
and drop it on MLO?

Oh oh, what is that Thunderlink ? I'm also very interested.
Indeed, I gave up with Outlook, and now use EssentialPIM, which have a very powerful linking feature.
But it also has a big issue with recurring events exceptions that makes me considering to change.
I'm gonna have a look at Thunderbird if it is possible to link to MLO.

Yes, when you drag & drop an email something does happen: it causes an
access violation in MLO!

So, to get a link to an email in Thunderbird (after you've installed the
ThunderLink add-on you:

1) right-click on the email and select "Copy ThunderLink to Clipboard"

2) Paste into an existing task's note file

3) Prepend the pasted link with "file:" (without the quotes)

Clicking on the link in MLO switches to Thunderbird and moves the focus
to the email message whereever it happens to be, even it has
subsequently been moved to a different folder.

It's not as slick as getting a link back to Outlook, but I'm just glad
that a link is possible at all - it's a really useful feature.

ThunderLink is an add-on for Thunderbird. You can read about it and and
install it here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/thunderlink/

It requires a bit of manual fiddling with the registry (if you're on
Windows) but if you follow the instructions it all works well.

If you paste a link into MLO, you've got to put "file:" (without the
quotes) in front of the pasted text for it to work.

Chris, thanks for the explanation.

FYI, drag & drop from Outlook to MLO does four things :
1. Create a new task at the selected location in the outline
2. Copy the email subject to the task caption
3. Copy the email body to the task note
4. Insert a clickable link in the task note that will bring up the original email message

I would like to see MLO do all of this for Thunderbird / Thunderlink. I would like to try submitting your access violation to MLO support and asking them to fix it.

If you agree and want to pursue this please send the exception trace file from your access violation.

Thanks,
Dwight
