The University of Delaware Department of Music is delighted to invite you to a symposium on ‘words and music’, which will take place on Friday 20th September and Saturday 21st September, 2019. The title and nature of the symposium is as follows:

Old Threads in New Tapestries
A symposium exploring the moment where words and music converge to inspire new works and redefine existing genres, featuring live performances, guest artists and invited speakers. 

Scholars and graduate students who would like to apply to present a poster at this conference should contact Dr. Jennifer M. Barker at jmbarker -at- udel.edu. The symposium directors would like to welcome anyone who has an interest in this subject, including composers, theorist, musicologists, performers and directors in the field of music, as well as scholars, performers and directors in the fields of English Literature and Theatre. 

The registration fee for the symposium is $20 for professionals, and $10 for students. To register and to receive further information on the symposium and accommodation, please contact Dr. Jennifer M. Barker: jmbarker -at- udel.edu.

Opening Concert presented by Guest Scholars and Musicians

Paper Presentation I - T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets and the Notion of 'Silent Music'
Dr. Maria Frendo, Senior Lecturer in English, University of Malta
Symposium Keynote Speaker 
Saturday 21st September, Gore Recital Hall, 10am - 11am

Paper Presentation II - Hamilton’s Hip-Hop Critics: Race, Authenticity, and Musical Theater
Dr. Philip Gentry, Associate Professor of Musicology, University of Delaware
Saturday 21st September, Gore Recital Hall, 11.30am - 12.30pm

Poster Session and SCI Improv Performance
