Introducing MakeDrive

I wrote a post about our work to create a unified filesystem across web
apps:

Imagine Dropbox in a web page, without installing any software, and
being able to share files and folders between different browsers,
applications, and mobile apps. That's what MakeDrive is.

The opportunity here for Webmaker is one where we can provide a
consistent layer across all of our tools and apps for creating and
working with web content. The opportunity for Mozilla is that we can
participate in the conversation around cloud storage, and user centered
approaches to data, privacy, etc.

I'm pretty excited about where it might take us, and hoping you'll help
us get there.

This looks amazing!

I wonder how this could hook into some ideas Doug and Vinay were having
(and I was listening all excited to) around the time of last year's
MozFest about hosting webpages in a distributed p2p manner with webrtc.

In a way, this seems like the same thing, just distributed over one's
own devices, rather than the world's. But then, when things are posted
publicly, there's no reason they couldn't be hosted by being distributed
over many people's web browsers.

I'm a bit tired, so finding it hard to express the result of the
smooshing together of these two ideas in my head. Maybe somebody kinda
understands what I'm trying to say, maybe not.

Either way, MakeDrive looks really cool.

Thanks for referencing the 'Firecloud' idea, Leo! The basic idea behind it was to use WebRTC, DHT and Persona to cobble together a Firefox extension that allowed for distributed file storage across installed instances.

It's probably best to pursue this one off-list, if people are interested in talking about it further in relation to MakeDrive. :-)
