52.01 upgrade damaged MAPI and SendTo

Upgraded to 52.01 from 45.8.0 on Win7. The upgrade destroyed the
ability to send attachments from other programs to a new email, e.g.
Irfanview and MS Office could no longer send images or documents to
Thunderbird.

Additionally, the upgrade damaged registry permissions on CLSID key
entries which caused the "Sendto mail recipient" entry in the "SendTo"
context menu to disappear.

A retrograde to 45.8 re-enabled the ability to send attachments from
other programs but did not repair the SendTo registry problems, that
took a couple of hours to identify and repair.

Has anyone else had similar experiences?

I once have the same problem and reported
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1308813
The workaround I found is to install Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable.

I think so. "email" is no longer in the SendTo folder (Win7-32).

As a workaround I put a Thunderbird shortcut in the SendTo folder, tried
it out using a desktop file, and it brought up a Tb message pane, so it
seems to work, at least in this one instance.

You can repair this issue by changing permissions on the following
registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{9E56BE60-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE}

You want to take ownership of the key with an administrative account,
then grant full permissions to administrators and to the system. If
you need further instructions, please let me know.

With W10, the context menu in File Explorer has Send to - Mail
recipient, and for a jpg it first displays a picture size dialog, then
launches TB (default email client) with the file attached to a new
message and some text in the message body. This is with TB 54, but I
expect it's the same for 52.

But it is unfortunate if 52 breaks SimpleMAPI for other programs. I
wonder if running fixmapi.exe has any effect after 52 is installed.

Thanks for the registry mod. I'll try it, taking the usual precautions.

My pleasure, let me know how it works out for you or, if you need
additional information.

I am curious, what prompted you to install that update to resolve the
above issue? Did you find it documented somewhere?

You wouldn't want to use it for a training film but I did manage to take
possession
of {9E56BE60-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE}, along with the subfolders,
and grant full permissions to System, Administrator, and myself for all
keys.

However, that said, I decided to import the original registry key status
back in because instead of "email" the revised registry entry created a
folder in SendTo named "Compressed (zipped) folder.ZFSendToTarget",
which did not appear in the Windows context menu and couldn't be opened.

Thunderbird.lnk still works, and if I rename it email.lnk (or whatever
the original name of it was) then even the cosmetics work. And MailTo
works as it should when I click an email address using FF - it may not
have been corrupted to begin with.

So thanks for your input. On the premise that life is short, however, I
think I'll take a pass on bird-dogging this one

When I had the problem, I searched the net and found this solution. It
worked!

You are right, it does work, and thank you for that. I was just
wondering where you found the solution? I searched for quite a while
to no avail.

I searched based on the error message. Can't remember where I got the
solution.

Same experience.
v52.0 also has the bug for me.
v45.8 does not; MAPI works here.

I logged a bug here:

Yes... reading the prodigious solutions in this thread but was surprised
to see this failure.

Will look at this:

There was a major bug involving attachments in TBird 52.1. This was
mostly fixed in TBird 52.1.1. However, see bug #1367707 at
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1367707>.

Consider:
* Most state mandate that drivers have liability insurance.
* Employers are mandated to have worker's compensation insurance.
* If you live in a flood zone, flood insurance is mandatory.
* If your home has a mortgage, fire insurance is mandatory.

Why then is mandatory health insurance so bad??
