I see that TB 60.0 was released on 6 Aug 2018? Why has it not been
available from TB 'About Thunderbird' as usual. My version (52.9.1)
still says 'you have the latest version'

I think it's possibly because most of the add-ons you may use with
version 52 just don't yet work with 60. I upgraded to version 60 and
certainly most of my add-ons (and I only use a handful) did not work, so
I reverted to 52 for the time being.

Several reasons, in roughly priority order:

1. We can't do it - The code isn't yet available to allow updates from
v52. It now looks like that might not happen until 60.2, or perhaps even
later.

2. Add-ons - many still have not been updated by their authors (OTOH
many will never be updated unless adopted by some other author, because
they have been abandoned by the original author)

3. QC (Quality Control) - The first point release or two of every major
release are used as an extended period of shakedown to discover, and
where possible fix, serious issues that were not discovered during the
beta period before updates are enabled for the full user population

I got notified and it tried to update but failed. Odd too as I had the
update settings to never check, but it did when I went to help->about.
I guess it's just the background check that settings is stopping.

There are a couple of add-ons I would not want to do without. 'Archive
thi's and 'ImportExportTool' are two that come to mind. I'll wait.

Thanks for the feedback.

This is what I find unexpected about TB behaviour. In other Software, about is just ... about. In TB it includes a forced Update that I cannot know about before choosing about menu item.
and that may render my Addons unusable and it may Not be possible to be reverted, see Diskussion in several other posts here and in Planning group for Update 52.9.1 to 60.

How did you get notified?

Updates don't work from 52.9.1, the installer for TB 60.0 needs to be
downloaded and installed over the previous version.

"*Thunderbird version 60.0 is only offered as direct download from
thunderbird.net <https://www.thunderbird.net> and not as upgrade from
Thunderbird version 52 or earlier. A future version 60.1 will provide
updates from earlier versions."*

Kaspersky, for example, has a Funktion showing important Updates, they already offer a TB 60 update. It seems they decided that 60 is fit for that.

In the about. It showed an update available and it downloaded and then
wanted a restart but after the restart I saw a popup or something that
said it couldn't update. Maybe it was in the about window, and it
didn't really ask to restart to update, but told me it couldn't. I
don't really remember. It was so out of the standard procedure it just
over took me with surprise.
I was kinda glad to not see it update as I had tried 60 a while back and
had a horrible time with it. I downloaded 52 and overwrote the program
and restored my profile.

I'm more interested in how long 52.x will be supported?

Not sure if Big Al is using Kaspersky on his Linux computer. He must be
using a Mozilla build because Ubuntu sure hasn't offered an update yet
and Help > About Thunderbird doesn't check or download updates because
that funktion is disabled by Ubuntu. We get notified by our systems
software updater applications.

So you don't use the build from your Linux distribution?

I have 52.9.1 installed and haven't been notified that an update was
available from Ubuntu.

The Help > About Thunderbird in the build from Ubuntu is disabled and
doesn't work.

I installed 52.9.1 from Thunderbird in my test user account, with a test
profile, and when I used Help > about Thunderbird was informed that it
was up to date.

Sorry I didn't specify, But I was on Windows 10 at the time. I've since
done the help about another time and it won't update, and yes, says I'm
up to date. I have no idea why it tried to update other than the fact
that I had somehow installed 60, maybe manually and then back loaded 52
since I didn't like it. Maybe the download of 52 after an initial run
wanted to update? Not sure, I was just banging keys and going though
muscle memory actions not recording what I was doing.
