Just updated to TB45.4 and noticed that in all of my SENT folders the
RECIPIENT space is blank ONLY for email sent using only BCC. The
RECIPIENT space had "UNDISCLOSED RECIPIENT" before I updated.
Is there a fix, is this a bug, was this feature removed, is there a
config setting?

Thank you for your time and consideration

That setting value was at TRUE. I tried it in FALSE as well, no joy.
Is there a location that holds the STRING "undisclosed recipients" at
some other location in config file? A search for that string comes up
empty. location you reference does not include string text.

Thanks you for looking into this issue.

I sent two E-mail messages to an alternate account of mine. Each had no
To: addres. Instead, I marked the alternate account's address as Bcc:.

In one case, mail.compose.add_undisclosed_recipients was True. In the
other case, it was False. In neither case did "Undisclosed Recipients"
appear in either the as-sent copies in the Send folder of my primary
account or the as-received copies in the Inbox folder of my alternative
account.

NOTE WELL:

The description of the preference variable
mail.compose.add_undisclosed_recipients at
<http://kb.mozillazine.org/Mail_and_news_settings> ("Mail and news
settings") is as follows:
> Used when there are no disclosed recipients (only bcc). Originally
> intended to work around bugs in some mail servers that disclosed the
> recipients. <bcc>True: Display the mailing list name
> False (default): Display "undisclosed-recipients:"

I might submit a bug report on this.

Putting "undisclosed-recipients" in the source does not meet the
definition of "Display".

I was just providing information for your bug report. Maybe there isn't
supposed to be a space between the colon and semicolon in the source.

Sorta, kinda like bug 1151448?

I don't recall. I receive messages with blank "To:", I figure it was
sent to a bunch of people using "Bcc:".

I don't care that "Undisclosed Recipients" doesn't appear.

FWIW, "Undisclosed Recipients" doesn't appear in received emails using
SeaMonkey 2.40 based on Gecko 43.

The last major release of Thunderbird was 38.0, so maybe someone could
download and test that version.

I submitted bug #1318931 with a comment reporting this as a regression
per WaltS48. See <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1318931>.

Note: The Description is blank, a result of trying to create a bug
report this morning pre-coffee. Instead, the bug is described in the
User Story.

The preference mail.compose.add_undisclosed_recipients is working as it should.
The description at kb.mozillazine.org is wrong.

The problems is this:
When message is sent with BCC recipients only, resulting |To: undisclosed-recipients: ;| is displayed as blank.

TB 31 displays "undisclosed-recipients" and TB 38 does not.

Bug #1318931 was closed on the basis that the description in
<http://kb.mozillazine.org/Mail_and_news_settings> is wrong, having the
"true" and "false" meanings transposed.

However, there is still a problem with the display. This is now bug
#1318964. See <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1318964>.

BUG 1065475 appears to be very similar or the same issue found for a
different reason.

Thank you all for looking into this, I was hoping it was just a config
switch or hidden setting.

I think these are two different bugs. One is a filter problem, in the
Filters component of the MailNews product. The other is a display
problem, in either the Mail Window Front End component or the Message
Reader UI component both of which are in the Thunderbird product.

According to a comment in the bug report, this should be fixed in the
spring of next year.

Normally this is achieved by filling in the following in the To: box
before sending:

m...@email.address "Undisclosed Recipients"

or possibly

Unenclosed Recipients <m...@email.address>

where m...@email.address is the senders email address.

Of course a copy of the email comes back to the sender but that can be
useful as a confirmation anyway.

Is that what you did when you sent them?

>Greetings and Happy Thanksgiving: For the last 15 years or so I have never had to place
anything in the TO:box. I send email to approx 25 people, I select
(highlight) all
of their names and click the "ADD TO BCC:" option, then "SEND" the
email. In the SENT folder
that email appears as "Undisclosed Recipients" in the Recipients column.
That was true until I updated
TB. Now that column is blank. Several kind people have investigated
this issue and have arrived at the conclusion,
this is a BUG going back several versions. I have been informed it
should be working come spring time when the next
version of TB is released.

Thank you for taking the time to look into this issue. You provided
options I had never heard of to date.

I may have misunderstood his issue. I thought his "filter" That was looking
for ("Undisclosed Recipients")in the (TO:) or (RECIPIENTS)column, quit
working
because TB quit posting "Undisclosed Recipients" in that column.

The good news is that it has been identified and a fix is in the works.
Thank you for the investigation and keeping me posted as to what has
been found.
