Yes well...
OMG...
Where has the compact tabbed "Options" pane/window gone?

And more importantly, how do I get it back ASAP?

Why has it been changed to the awful, waste of screen space (literally) it
now is?

You are wasting the same screen space with the browser maximized and one
tab open. Even with a smaller window it is still the same window.

I actually like the new options dialog, although I admit that it took me
by surprise at first. I'm blind and use a screen reader, which does a
good job in handling HTML content. With FF 38, I can go into what my
screen reader refers to as "browse mode" which allows me to navigate the
dialog as though it is a Web page. The only thing which surprised me a
bit was the lack of an "Ok" and "cancel" buttons. I guess this means
that once you change an option it's set. The fact that it loads in this
new format also means that I can press ctrl-tab to move from the options
dialog back to the open Web page. Prior to 38, the options dialog
essentially covered up the opened page. Since this is just like the
behavior of the addons dialog, I can get used to it and, as I said, I
now like it.

Once again go back to an old version without doing any troubleshooting
to see if an extension, or something you or the update changed in
about:config caused the update to break.

How many updates and reversions have you done? This changes the profile
each update and doesn't remove the changes from the profile.

It is break, not brake.

Next update if you don't want assistance don't post anything.

Not really, the old tabbed pane within a window would open most of the
tabs inside that pane.

The new thing opens a whole window each time.

How can can be returned to the tabbed pane method?

Sorry about the misspelling but it still won't help to get lost Firefox

This is a long shot, but it worked for some one else recently who had
window size problems. I recommended it to a second person, but he
never reports results back, just leaves the thread, so I don't know if
it helped or not.

Try closing Firefox 38.x, deleting a file called localstore.rdf from the
profile folder, and restarting Firefox.

It's a long shot because Firefox isn't *supposed* to be using that file
any more, and it hasn't caused problems for years -- if corrupted
localstore.rdf is a problem again, I need to file a bug. So please do
report back if it helps.

Deleting localstore.rdf did not correct the problem but I did get it
corrected by backing up the whole profile,deleting the profile in
Firefox and copying it back to Firefox 38.What it did I have no idea but
it is working.It is preferences in Fedora and options in windows.I may
have to install in windows just to see if it is messed up but I have a
tough time using windows anymore.

Upon further review I have found the problem.I like the Aeon big theme.
If I install it preferences is broke.Remove it and all is well.
Q thanks for the tips.

Opening the options panel should open in a new tab, not a new window,
and clicking on each options tab should keep you in the current tab. If
it's not working that way for you, maybe you've got an extension
interfering? Try it with add-ons disabled.

CTR extension fixes that nasty problem as does changing an about:config
setting "browser.preferences.inContent" to "false". Mozilla (and other
devs) really need to remember that phone and crappy tablets are NOT the
only way people use Fx. That ungainly, really messed up page is
designed to look horrible for desktop users who have decent machines and
big monitors because it was designed only with phone and tablet with
touch screens in mind. It's just another reason to use Pale Moon mostly
since Fx devs have made it clear they no longer want anything to do with
power users.

Aha! As I wouldn't be running any Firefox installs without CTR, (Seriously
dislike to new Fx UI) that was an easy fix.

Thank for the tip, appreciated.

This !@#% habit of designing everything for touchscreens is really
annoying ain't it? What used to take 2x2 inches of screen real estate
now *requires scrolling*! That's right, the new "preferences in a tab"
are so spaced out they take about 2 screens high on my laptop - and the
exact same content was just 1/3 of a screen high before! Windows 8 /
Windows 10 / the new "DC" Acrobat Reader, all of them the same
touchscreen spaced-out crap. With this and the anti-skeumorphism
movement (I hate John Ive) giving us flat 1-color icons, no shadows
anywhere, clickable things that you cannot tell can be clicked, etc, the
User Interface is just going to hell...

Use the zoom controls to make it as teeny-tiny as you want to. Or use
some CSS to make it always teeny-tiny.

Hmm, that's an interesting proposition. I don't mind settings in a TAB,
why the hell not, but I shouldn't need to scroll down to see all the
settings in a group, I am very proficient with the mouse, there's no
need for 50 pixels of space between each line.

Care to share some content.css to resize the settings?

I use the Stylish extension, as opposed to editing userChrome.css and
useContent.css files. Here's a quick-and-dirty, heavy-handed way to
jam everything together vertically. You may want to change one or two
of these to higher px values.

@namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);
@-moz-document url-prefix("about:preferences") {
* {
padding-top : 0px ! important ;
padding-bottom : 0px ! important ;
margin-top : 0px ! important ;
margin-bottom : 0px ! important ;
border-top : 0px ! important ;
border-bottom : 0px ! important ;
}
}

That part of the interface is in-content now. I use Stylish for this
stuff, but if you're going old-school, I think it would belong in
userContent.css, not userChrome.css.

I have Stylish, I did not know you could edit Chrome with it (my
UserChrome is relatively big, UserContent is tiny). I have now moved all
my UserContent into Stylish (it does syntax-highlighting and even does
some "syntax-completion" (like Visual Studio)).

So I defined a new Style as suggested above, and it works, altho messing
with Border-Top/Bottom screws-up the check-boxes (the top/bottom borders
no longer draw) which is a shame, as setting only padding/margin to zero
for everything doesn't /quite/ remove the need for scrolling.

Thanks!
