Again, it is the way those forums are designed.  The idea is that each post has a fixed height allocated to it and if the text overlaps then the scroll bars kicks in.

Maybe they get implemented when you change the size of the browser, but
I don't ever recall them being there by default before.

Nope the content changes to fit the window and the scroll bars are still
unusable.

Probably because there is nothing to scroll!!  If there isn't enough text to scroll.  Me thinks so because of my  limited HTML/CSS coding.

hey waltS48,
thanks for reporting this bug.
as i said, i tried with chrome and it doesn't have the scrollbars.
so this issue might be only with firefox?
i wonder if anyone out there have the same problem.

I do in Firefox 42.0 and Firefox 43.0 release candidate, which should be
a release later tomorrow.

In other words, there will be a new release and an update to 42.0, which
has the same problem.

FWIW, I have FF 42.0 on Mac OS X 10.11.1 El Capitan, and the scroll bars
in Google Groups work OK.

The scroll bar in the groups work. The scroll bars in *each post* in a
thread don't.

Firefox always causes scrollbars to appear on any element with
"overflow:scroll", even when there's no content overflowing the
element. But I can't find what's causing Firefox to think
"overflow:scroll" should be applied to the message DIVs at Google
Groups. The DOM Inspector confirms that that's what Firefox is doing,
but in this case it's no help in figuring out why.

Using Stylish <https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/stylish/>, this
will get rid of the useless scrollbars for now:

@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);
@-moz-document domain("groups.google.com") {
#tm-tl > DIV > DIV > DIV > DIV > DIV:nth-child(3) > DIV:nth-child(4) > DIV > DIV {
overflow : auto ! important
}
}

Maybe that should be a comment in the bug report?

I thought about it, but I think anybody from Mozilla who takes a look
into it will quickly see at least as much as I was able to figure out.

you are awesome, »Q«,
i used your code and added it as a new stylish script, the scrollbars in the posts went away.

thanks.

Please post. You're assuming too much. If you post someone who knows
how to fix it may see the email. Otherwise, we wait until someone has
time to reproduce your work.

I added it to the bug report.
