Hi Mozillians interested in Developer Engagement!

Great conversation on the first day's conversation. Keep it coming!

In day 2 of the developer engagement leads offsite we discussed:

-

Developer program benefits
-

Q1 focus
-

Project proposals
-

Product menu

Developer program benefits

We started discussing what benefits we can offer to open web developers in
our developer program. We took that discussion further and started defining
what could be done in Q1.

Proposed Q1 focus

-

Localization Exchange - a platform to connect app developers with
localizers
-

Badges
-

Extending the MDN developer profile in an iterative fashion. For
example, adding badges.

There are many other goals in support of these and other initiatives. For
example, there are things like:

-

metrics dashboard
-

localizing Hacks
-

adding StackOverflow to MDN pages

All of these ideas (and possibly others detailed on the current MDN project
wiki [1]) should be prioritized and resourced by going through the project
proposal and product menu processes!

Project proposals

Building on yesterday’s conversation, we agreed that we should have a
standard and open way that people can propose projects and that should feed
content into the product menu.

We suggest that there be a form that feeds this list[1] that could be the
same type of form that we use for MDN bugs and developer event requests.

Product menu

We discussed a “Product Menu” concept that the MDN dev team has been
drafting. [2] The primary objectives of such a concept are:

-

Single artifact that shows all work - from planned to resolved
-

Openness and consistency when deciding priority of projects
-

Direct discussion between stakeholders across functions and roles
(including volunteers, paid staff, etc)
-

Foster autonomy of individuals and remove managers as road-blocks

The primary goal behind the concept is striking the right balance between
autonomy and keeping us all working as a team on our established strategies
and goals. So, we want to pilot a product menu for our Q1 “slack time” -
i.e., any and all time outside our Q1 project commitments to Localization
Exchange, Badges, and Profile Enhancements.

*Outreach efforts*

We also spent some time reviewing and discussing some ideas for outreach
efforts for developers that came out of some work done with MADE. There are
some really fun ideas for how we can help inspire developers every where to
create open web apps. They ranged from snippets that show everyone how they
can control the CSS of a web page to big global scale puzzles that would
pull together developers from around the world. More on what we might do to
come.

Happy Holidays!
