Good news, everyone!

*The first string freeze for Gaia is now in effect.*

Thanks for waiting patiently as we polished the final wording and
wrestled with technology when creating the repositories.

How much time do we have?
-------------------------

You have until October 21st to complete this batch. But please follow
the newsgroups in case the schedule changes.

Which apps are string-frozen?
-----------------------------

This is the first string freeze (there will be a second one in October)
and the list of apps that you can start working on (the "bucket 1") is
as follows:

Apps

Browser
Camera
Clock
Communications/Contacts
Communications/Dialer
FM Radio
Gallery
Music
SMS
Video

System

Keyboard

See https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:B2G for details.

Where are the files?
--------------------

The files live in Mercurial in the special gaia-l10n hierarchy:

https://hg.mozilla.org/gaia-l10n/

The en-US files are there as well:

https://hg.mozilla.org/gaia-l10n/en-US

Remember to clone via SSH, for instance:

hg clone ssh://hg.mozilla.org/gaia-l10n/pl

You can use compare-dirs (`pip install compare-locales` will get you
compare-dirs, too) to see the stats.

Some locales will see some strings localized, taken from the git
repository. If you're one of those locales, please review all the
existing translations carefully. Let me repeat for better effect :)

*This is important!* If you worked on Gaia l10n before the string
freeze, please make sure your translations are up-to-date. English
strings may have changed!

What about the dashboard?
-------------------------

You can see the compare-locales output on your locale's team dashboard.
For instance, for Polish, this will be:

https://l10n.mozilla.org/teams/pl

(We'll make it look nicer.)

If you can't see Gaia in there, sign up on the following etherpad and we
will hook your locale up:

https://l10n.etherpad.mozilla.org/community-gaia-list

Sign-off when you're done and have tested your work.

How to test my localization?
----------------------------

Use a desktop build!

See these quick & dirty instructions to get started:

https://gist.github.com/3793871

If they don't work for you, email me or talk to me on IRC. With your
help, I can make this HOWTO much more robust and accurate.

You might also want to check out these two blog posts by yours truly:

Running Boot to Gecko on your desktop

How to test localizability of Gaia system apps
http://www.informationisart.com/13

Going beyond Bucket 1
---------------------

What else is in store? There will be a second string freeze, expect
updates on the schedule. And we'll also soon start the localization of
the Gecko part of Firefox OS, taken from mozilla-aurora. Think
netError.dtd, global.dtd, intl.properties etc. Most of that already
exists in mobile/ so I don't think there will be a lot of work there.

Questions?
----------

Come on, I thought I covered everything! ;)

Please do ask questions in this thread or on IRC. This process is an
interesting mix of old and new. There might be hiccups along the way,
but my goal is to make it as smooth as possible. I'll appreciate your
feedback and ideas!

Happy translating.

Actually, it's October 26th!

That's even better, right?

*facebook.properties*
friendsFound = Found {{numFriends}} friends to import
I think that this string needs some plural form

*dialer.properties*
unlock-a11y-button.aria-label=pickup

Can you clarify when this string is used? To call someone considering that
there's already a "reply"?

*costcontrol.properties*
plantype-setup-title = My phone and internet plan is

Sounds weird (shouldn't it be "are"?)

*settings.properties*
fullStatus-wps-overlapped = Another WPS PBC AP was found.

Not really l10n related, but what is a "WPS PBC AP"? AP=access point,
WPS=wireless protected sysmte, PBC=??

about-your-rights-2 = You are not granted any trademark rights or licenses
to the trademarks of the Mozilla Foundation or any party, including without
Temporary Text limitation the Firefox name or logo. Additional information
on trademarks may be found Only here.

This string doesn't look very "final"

media-storage-details=Photos, videos, and music are stored in the SD Card.
See Media Storage for details.
I think "SD card" was replaced with "memory card" in all other strings.

WPS = Wi-Fi Protected Setup
PBC = Push-Button Configuration
AP = Access Point

Basically WPS refers to the semi-automated way of setting up an AP
without having background knowledge about how Wi-Fi networks work. PBC
refers to an actual button in the hardware, and by pushing it you
trigger the configuration.

Can we get MXR to index those repos?

And that directory is not listed in the Mercurial index at <https://hg.mozilla.org>, FWIW.

Hi all,
I went though the process of cloning gaia using instruction on
https://gist.github.com/3793871.
Everything went well.
But when I come to:
ibrahima@ubuntu:~/gaia$ hg clone ssh://hg.mozilla.org/gaia-l10n/ff

I get the message:
*remote: Permission denied (publickey,keyboard-interactive).
abort: no suitable response from remote hg!*
Does anybody know wht the problem is?

PS: I have the locale folder for en-US but not the Fulah folder.

I'm not sure how to deal with some specific strings, like those:

feedback
- feedback-url.action = http://b2gtestdrivers.allizom.org/comments

settings
- online-support-link=www.telefonica.com
- call-support-number=+1 650-903-0800

How should I localize them?

I'd like to report an error, but Boot2Gecko doesn't have a l10n
component and Mozilla Localizations doesn't have a en-US locale. To
which component should I file it? (if at all)

The string is[1]:

fullStatus-wps-timedout = WPS was timedout.

Eduardo.

Hi Eduardo,

I suggest filing a bug in Boot2Gecko > Gaia and adding the 'l12y'
keyword which I watch :)

One more thing: it's not the case for this string, but for apps that
are not string frozen (and settings aren't [1]) it might be good to
crosscheck if the problem occurs in the .properties file in the git
repository:

https://github.com/mozilla-b2g/gaia/blob/master/apps/settings/locales/settings.en-US.properties

The en-US files in HG might be slightly outdated compared to git. I'll
try to migrate them over more frequently to avoid confusion.

Thanks,

Checking that on two different repositories looks like a lot of work.

Would it be safe for us (those of us who want to, anyway) to clone the
git repository instead of the mercurial one? "git pull" instead of "hg
pull" would not make a huge difference in the workflow ;). Or is the
git repository something like "central" and the mercurial one something
like "beta"?

I hope that you follow the same Firefox policy on l10n changes so that
nothing goes unnoticed.

Eduardo.

This is only because some of the apps are not string frozen yet. I
recommend starting the l10n work on the bucket1 apps [1]. For bucket1,
you only need to check the HG en-US repository.

The reason why I suggested checking in the git repo is that the
Settings app is not string-frozen yet.

The layout and naming of the l10n files is slightly different in git
than it is in hg.

git: apps/browser/locales/browser.en-US.propertis
hg: en-US/apps/browser/browser.properties

Running compare-locales/compare-dirs is not be possible because of
this. If it doesn't bother you too much, you can of course track the
git repo.

And if you do, know that you're helping me a ton discover
localizability issues :)

Yes, for string-frozen apps we have the same policy as outlined on

Stas, maybe xulrunner sdk is old. I cloned latest github clone (19.0a1), but when I type "DEBUG=1 make profile" terminal downloads 17.0a1 version of xulrunner sdk.

I have good news!

I was able to work with the B2G and Gaia devs last week and we
identified the bugs that were causing problems.

- DEBUG=1 used to not work at all. This was fixed two or three weeks ago.

- I pushed for fixing bug 809972 [1] due to which it was impossible to
actually switch the locale on the desktop build.

- Lastly, there's bug 799768 [2] which is still open but has a
work-around patch attached to it. This bug makes it almost impossible
to use the desktop build on Linux. This was blocking me on debugging
other l10n problems. I now build my own desktop builds with the patch
applied. You can find them here (64bit only for now):

http://people.mozilla.com/~stas/b2g/

I updated the wiki pages about the B2G localization process. Hopefully,
they should provide a comprehensive guide to testing localization on the
desktop builds now.

https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:B2G
https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:B2G/Localizers

(I still don't have access to a Windows machine, so my recommendation is
to use a Linux VM on Windows for B2G testing).

Please let me know if you were able to run the desktop builds as
described on the wiki. If not, let me know what problems you ran into
and I'll try to debug/fix them.

Thanks!

Tried quickly but still unable to change language on Mac:

* I don't see the language I add in Settings (I tried opening
index.html in the browser and removing hidden attribute from the
language selector and it's there)
* the script migrate.sh doesn't seem to work

When running migrate.sh I get a bunch of errors like this

migrate.sh: line 95: $_tmp: ambiguous redirect
usage: mv [-f | -i | -n] [-v] source target
mv [-f | -i | -n] [-v] source ... directory

This might be related to caching. Also, did you edit both
apps/settings/index.html and apps/settings/resources/languages.lang?

The setup screen (FTU, First Time Usage) has the list of locales
hardcoded in it for now, so just press "Next" until it's gone.

Stupid question: are you sure you're using the profile made with
DEBUG=1 ? What operating system are you on? On Mac OS X, it's
important to run b2g-bin instead of b2g.

Yeah, definitely not good. What does "which mktemp" say when you run
in in the command line? Can you try making a change similar to this

Tried several times, also removed completely the existing git repository
and started from scratch (I'm doing it again right now).

Now I see a completely different screen (I guess that's the
setup/welcome screen). I see "Italian" but it's disabled, I can only
select English or Spanish.
I completed the setup with English, then in Settings I don't see Italian

That's the problem, now I can see and set the language to Italian even
if it doesn't change anything ;-)

Changed error

sed: 1: "/\[it\]/a @import url(g ...": command a expects \ followed by text

And now all locales.ini are empty.

D'oh! I was thinking about b2g-bin when I was writing this!

Err, what is your bash version? Do you code in bash? Can you try
coming up with a patch? :)

Yeah, that's expected with the error above. "cd gaia && git checkout
-- ." should remedy that.

There is a problem with this script on mac. I have some notes:

- _tmp=$(mktemp)
- sed "/\[$loc\]/a $import_loc\n" $ini > "$_tmp"
+ _tmp=$(mktemp -u=777 /tmp/gaia/tmp.XXXX)
+ gsed "/\[$loc\]/a $import_loc" $ini > $_tmp

mktemp has different usage on mac

sed does not work, but gnu-sed yes. If you have "brew", install gnu-sed.

Can someone show me a locales.ini with a second locale? At least I can
change it manually without messing up things even more ;-)

Sure. Here's the one for browser:
https://github.com/mozilla-b2g/gaia/blob/master/apps/browser/locales/locales.ini

@import url(browser.en-US.properties)

[fr]
@import url(browser.fr.properties)

[zh-TW]
@import url(browser.zh-TW.properties)

I almost gave up ;-)

Opened a Linux VM and run into a variant of this error (how big is
xulrunner on Linux??)
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=704298

So I run migrate.sh and moved the apps folder to my Mac, at least now it
starts in Italian.
