Hi all,

As you probably very well know, Mozilla is gearing up towards releasing
a mobile OS based on Gecko and HTML, codenamed Boot to Gecko, or B2G.

It is a stack comprised of a Linux kernel and low-level userspace layer,
with Gecko running on top of it, and all UI and other apps implemented
in HTML and JS. Gaia is the name of the UI, which will consist of HTML5
apps, like the Homescreen, Dialer, Contacts, Browser, Email, Gallery,
Camera, Clock, Calculator, Lockscreen, Settings etc.

See https://wiki.mozilla.org/B2G/Architecture#Terminology for more
information about the architecture and codenames.

We will be soon kicking off the localization effort for B2G.

The plan is this:

- the UX freeze this Friday, July 20th,
- the first string freeze the next Friday, July 27th,
- the second string freeze TBD, probably the first week of August,
- the deadline will be Tuesday, August 21st (more than 3 weeks total).

Why two string freezes? We are already hearing from developers that
they won't be able to freeze everything by 7/27 (think error messages
and rare and unexpected paths the interaction might follow). We prefer
to freeze what we can early (7/27) and start the localization right
then. For the second string freeze we will probably see some additions,
but I'll do my best to limit changes to already localized strings.

What's the workload? We don't really know yet for sure, as not all the
UI has landed yet. Today's numbers are this:

~500 strings in Gaia
~200 strings in Gecko/toolkit, but there's a good chance that we will be
able to reuse Mobile translations here.

(FYI, the entire Firefox Desktop with toolkit is ~6600, Firefox Mobile
is ~5000 strings.)

Lastly, keep in mind that the first devices will be marketed in South
America, so we will be focusing on Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese for
the first release. This does not mean, however, that we can't ship B2G
with more locales available, for users in the said geographies, and for
testing everywhere else. We are also investigating the feasibility of
having langpacks for B2G.

So, who's in? :)

Best,
-stas

I'm in and definitely more are coming to take this into Spanish. Do we know
what will be the localization platform? Narro, Verbatim?

Waiting for the signal!

I'd rather be in from the start with Scots Gaelic assuming that l10n
WILL be part of the deal, it keeps the volume down over time.

What format will l10n take? As in, Pootle server or somesuch? Or just
like Firefox?

Cheers

Hi Stas,

great news.

Count me in for ca.

There are not too many strings in the end, but will the strings in
kaze repository be reused?

Cheers,

P.D.: Crossing fingers for a better l10n outcome than in Firefox for Android :(

From what I understand, apart from the new .properties plural forms
moz2po should work so these can be hosted on Verbatim. I'll be looking
at things to if we can put up PO files at mozilla.locamotion.org for the
Firefox localisers that work there.

Hi,

I have some questions/doubts regarding this. Comments inline.

Is the second freeze a strict freeze? I don't think I'm the only one who
is tired of suffering broken string freezes (did I read mobile?), so
it's important to know if this is going to be treated as a serious
deadline for any string changes.

Any estimates on the word count? That gives a more accurate estimation
of the amount of work to be done.

What are the plans to market the devices? I ask this because in case
B2G-enabled devices are not available around soon, people could opt to
prioritize other l10n work. This is specially true for those who are
localizing into small languages.

so, any news on this?

since the string freeze has been four days ago, I'm still awaiting for news and more information about the localization process, where can we find the sources, etc...

It wasn't. The UX freeze was. The first string freeze is this Friday.

That said, I'm both also interested in more details and sure that Stas
is working on them - the B2G project is under a ton of pressure to meet
various delivery deadlines, there might be a few instances where we are
cutting things close there.

Hey Stas,

I just came across this thread (albeit, a bit too late) and was wondering if anybody is already working on the Bn-IN translations for B2G.

If nobody is currently working on the Bn-IN locale for B2G, I would like to start with the same.

Hi Sayak,

I haven't heard about other bn-IN efforts for B2G so far. I'm happy to
hear that you want to work on it!

I've added bn-IN to https://l10n.etherpad.mozilla.org/b2g-locales-list

We don't have localized builds yet, but this is a good start. I'll
file a bug to create a Mercurial repository for you and to add bn-IN to
the localization dashboard at l10n.mozilla.org.

It was good seeing you in Singapore!
