[Firefox Test Pilot]: new web project ready for localization

Hello Localizers,

As many of you may have heard, Mozilla launched the Firefox Test Pilot
program in May: https://testpilot.firefox.com.

It allows you to try experimental features before they’re released and help
us decide which features to bring to the rest of the world, and which to
skip. To participate, you need to install the Test Pilot add-on and then
activate experiments listed on the Test Pilot home page. To learn more
about the project, watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NCk8h5cfFI and
read https://wiki.mozilla.org/Test_Pilot.

While you will be able to localize the actual experiments shortly, the Test
Pilot web page is now ready for localization.

This is a very special moment, because it's the first time we're shipping a
project using L20n and the FTL syntax! Most of the time you won't even
notice any difference localizing with Pontoon. There are two things that
I'd like to call out, however.

When you see something like this:

[html/placeholder] email goes here :)

…please only localize the part after the ] bracket. It's the value of the
`placeholder` attribute displayed in the `<input>` element. It's also
important to keep the whitespace intact - the easy way to do so is by
copying the original string into translation.

When you see this:

| a lot! Please check out our other experiments,
| and stay tuned for more to come!

…ignore the | characters in front (which denote a multiline string) and
just put all of your translation in one line, just as you'd normally do in
Pontoon.

We're working on a better UI for L20n in Pontoon and these little quirks
will certainly go away in future projects. For now, please bear with us and
help us test L20n in production!

Hi,

In terms of priority I’m somewhat curious as to what other projects
there may be at the end of the year (I’m still waiting for things to
happen on Health Report), but never mind.

Could you please give some information on how many experiments there
will be, how much content there is for localization and how frequently
updates will be released?

We should have one project before the end of the year.

It's definitely hard to know in advance the number of strings:
localization will cover the add-on (usually few strings) and the server
side (pages). A lot changes based on the experiment.

I think the expectation is to have less than 10 experiments in a year.

Hi,

Great news but I have couple questions…

What is the social contract?
What about plural rules/selectors?
What about variants/custom entities and placeables references?
What about external arguments documentation?
Could the rules be written somewhere?

@Michael,

Regarding Internet Health Report (IHR) (in de, es, fr only), a major
technical issue is blocking the entire project. I was going to share the
newly proposed deadline, but given the constant change of everything
weekly, I am holding off to the info until we have a discussion with the
team this week, until the team gets l10n buy-ins. I will continue using the
targeted email threads to communicate the latest changes in a few days.

Hi,

On FHR and in light of the several problems there have been so far,
would it not be better if Mozilla scrapped the whole project and came
back when everybody is clear about the size of the content and how the
project is handled?


On the subject of Test Pilot, there has been an update of 97 strings,
some of them quite long. Is this the size to be expected for further
updates? If so, I hope there won’t be any.

@Michael, share your view on the IHR project. Let's take it off of this
thread and discuss among the communities who will work on this project.

@All who requested the Test Pilot project,
A file was left out when the project was being prepared. It was just being
added not long ago. If you thought you had completed it, please check the
status bar in Pontoon again. Future update will not be likely at this
size. It will follow a 2-week sprint cycle.

It's above the main title, I guess the 3 dots are used to space them
out more (I used … anyway).
