At the beginning of March around 80000 people involved with the mobile industry in some way or other will gather in Barcelona for the unmissable week of mayhem which is Mobile World Congress.

There will be a huge range of activities ranging from the official conference programme, miles of exhibition space, and innumerable unofficial and fringe events all over the city. They will cover everything from suited operators and radio manufacturers muttering quietly about 5G standards and test labs at one end, all the way through the big media and corporates trying to work out what mobile means for them this week, devices and gadgets galore, hipster startup CEOs with the latest buzz and hype about apps, IOT and wearables; and on through to use of mobile for social change in the 3rd world and much much more.

Scotland will be well represented with our own stand run by SE, SDI, and Interactive Scotland. This will provide the base for nearly 30 Scottish companies (http://www.sdi.co.uk/knowledge-hub/articles/insight/mwc2015) to be present at the show, as well as the odd hanger on like MoMoEdi ;->!

This Studio Session in partnership with our friends at Kotikan and Interactive Scotland is all about bringing back some of the “Buzz from Barcelona” and will include:

* Alisdair Gunn leads Interactive Scotland (http://www.interactivescotland.com/) on behalf of Scottish Enterprise and spends his time delivering specialist expert market insight, funding, innovation, technology, business development, partnering and venture investment expertise to high growth digital and technology companies. He will spend his MWC connecting Scottish companies into the larger corporates and other big players and will report back on the topics and trends which are exciting them.

* Andrew Williams is the COO of Kotikan (http://kotikan.com/), Scotland’s largest mobile app development company, making apps for Skyscanner, FanDuel and Standard Life amongst others. Fresh back from the biggest mobile event in the world, Andrew will give you a 15 minute blitz through his favourite gadgets from the conference - what he thinks will stick and what to give a miss.

* Geoff Ballinger, founder and organiser of Mobile Monday Edinburgh and system architect for deltaDNA (http://www.deltadna.com/), is attending for the 12th successive year and will take a wider and possible somewhat contrary view, perhaps best summarised as the “other side of” MWC.

As usual we will finish with an open discussion session and then networking. Refreshments will be provided.

This month we are using the Beer & Skittles (http://www.beerandskittlesbar.co.uk/) on Picardy Place for the first time:

We will kick off at 6.30pm.

This is a free event but places are limited so pre-registration is required via:

Twitter hashtag #MoMoEdi

This event is kindly supported by Kotikan and deltaDNA.

MWC was even bigger this year, with 93000 registered delegates, and plenty more who just attended the various fringe events, and it certainly felt like it on the train out to the fira!

With so much going on it was always going to be hard to see everything so personally I made a concious decision to put my primary focus on IoT this year. Even in that space there is a huge amount of variety and confusion - at one event I was being seriously told that a set of video headphones and a food 3D printer were core IoT technologies! It draws together everybody from makers at one end through to the GSMA themselves at the other so plenty of contradictory interests and points of view.

I look forward to seeing some of you at the event on the 16th and telling you more about it over a drink or two.

Geoff.

I am delighted to announce we have added an additional keynote speaker for Monday night.

Some of you might remember Bruno Panara from when he was a MoMoEdi regular a few years ago when he was running his own location based games startup Tigatag. Bruno has since joined Google in London where he works with partners to distribute Google products and technologies, and spends time at Campus London, helping out the startup community and spreading the word about Campus. He will be talking about how Google and Android are looking at mobile and what he learned at MWC.
