Greetings all,

I'm happy to announce the official (non-beta) release of Mnemosyne 2.0 for OS X.

You can download it here:

Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion are all supported.

My goal is to continue to offer timely Mac versions of future releases of Mnemosyne from 10.6 up.

Cheers,
Patrick

Your persistence is appreciated, Patrick:  I would have had a 'Hell of a time' attempting what you did because my mind works with pictures and objects for anything new.  I only go to text and numbers for something that I already know off by heart, like a Google Route of known territory;  a health problem;  sailing...

Your latest beta is doing well on my MacBook Intel Duo with OS  10.6.8 — I don't expect too many arbitrary problems because the hardware is all high quality and within specification to be compatible with software;  so I'll install non-ß Mnemosyne 2.0 for OS X in a couple of days.  I suspect that high quality windows machines may have fewer problems than lower quality stuff with a zoo of low cost bits and pieces.  This is intended to be a useful comment and I'd be interested to see how it works out.

Macs will run windows very reliably, too,  IF  multiple incompatibilities, in negative synergy, might be what is giving some unfortunate people inexplicable torturous hangs and hiccups.  NOT  an expression of platform religion or doctrine because many of us are in trades or professions that demand, more or less, the quality and flavour of platform.  I always get a model a year after introduction and it seems to last 5 to 7 years with virtually no trips to the repair shop.  Very cheap computing.

Sorry to hear you're having problems.  Could you provide more details about your Mac?  (Ideally, the model number-> Click the Apple in the upper left and choose "About this Mac")

Cheers,
Patrick

Ok, thanks for this report.  I will look into this and try to get it fixed for the next version (2.1.1).  In the meantime, unfortunately the only alternative is to install from source.

I am having the same problem. I have Mac OS 10.6.8, running on a MacMini with 1.83GHz Intel Duo processor, 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. The error message is a simple "You can't open the application Mnemosyne, because it's not supported on this type of Mac."

Any help would be appreciated.

Actually, could you please try copying the application (Mnemosyne) and then running the copy of the application?

Ok, I see what the problem is now-- the current version only supports 64-bit machines (Core Duo is a 32-bit processor).

I am not sure how to fix this off the top of my head.  I will look into it and post what I find.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. The application downloads as a virtual disk. When mounted, the disk shows the Mnemosyne icon with a strike through it (like "No Smoking", but "No Mnemosyne") and the Applications folder. I copied the app onto the Desktop, and it still has a strike through. Duplicated it, same thing. Do you want me to copy it to a specific place, or in a specific way?

Failing that, is 2.1.1 far off? I have no idea how to install from source.

I'm sorry, I did look into this, but I forgot to report back.  With my level of knowledge, I will require a 32-bit Mac to make a 32-bit build, but unfortunately I don't have such a Mac lying around.  Thus, unless someone else with an older Mac steps forward (volunteers welcome-- I'd be happy to provide all the support I can to help someone make a 32-bit build), there probably won't be a release for 32-bit Macs, sorry.

Regards,
Patrick

Hi,

This may or may not work, but I've just built a distributable version that works on my laptop running Leopard.
Feel free to download the massive (74MB zipped!) application from http://computing.dcu.ie/~omacfh/Mnemosyne.zip and let me know if anything is broken. It might run on my machine but not anyone else's for all I know...

best of luck,
Oisín

Well it seems to run on my 10.5 laptop and the 10.7 iMac at work... so that's something.

Nice! BTW, if you send me your sourceforge account, I can be make you
a release manager, so that you can upload the installer there.

Thanks,

Peter

Yes, it works on my machine as well.  If you're interested, you're welcome to take over the Mac releases from me, since they all should be forwards (but not backwards) compatible.

If you do make this the main release, please package it as a DMG and not a ZIP so that it works the same as other Mac software.  If you decide to go this route, I can send you the checklist and dummy disk image I have been using to prepare the Mac releases.  It only takes about five minutes per release.

I got a "Database error: Driver not loaded Driver not loaded" on Browse Cards :(, and Preferences won't load as well, has a long error with traceback.

On the plus side, I DID get it to work with Wineskin Winery and the Windows 2.2.1 .exe setup file. Interface isn't ideal, but it does work! (http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com)

You're replying to a very old mail. Are you sure you used the latest OSX installer posted on our website?
