Good Afternoon,

I am trying a few different SRS programs.

Is there a way to select two different fonts and sizes for the each side of the card. I am learning Arabic which needs Arabic fonts and larger font sizes than English font and sizes for words.

I also wish there were a way to add different fields, and then choose which two fields show on the card.

Is there a way to do that?

Thanks.

Hi Ayesha,

Put your Arabic cards in the 'vocabulary' card type. Then, using
'settings' - 'configure mnemosyne' - 'card appearance' you can set the
font for 'foreign word or expression' as you wish.

If you study multiple languages, you can use 'cards' - 'manage card
types' to clone the vocabulary card type in e.g. Arabic, Chinese, etc..
and have a different font for each language.

The Vocabulary card type is designed to have just enough fields to
capture the vast majority of the use cases ('foreign word',
'pronunciation', 'meaning', 'notes').

If you want more configurability, please vote for 'add UI support for
n-sided cards' on our uservoice forum.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Peter!

Thank you!  It works so beautifully and easily!  Especially after fighting with Anki 2 for last two days!  It recently recently had an updated beta version that requires users to type coding for styling/formatting of the cards which is Greek to me!  And Anki is based on SM2.  I was happy to see that Mnemosyne is based on SM11, as well as the online study being conducted.  I have SM15, but it is not very user friendly.

I just figured out how to attach a soundclip, which is important because I am creating flashcards for my courses using:  http://press.georgetown.edu/book-list/al-kitaab .  To keep the formatting of the book and online companion (sample can be seen here:   Alif Baa, 3rd edition:  http://www.alkitaabtextbook.com/demo/34853.html  and  al-Kitaab, Part 1, 3rd edition:  http://www.alkitaabtextbook.com/demo/42475.html consistent with the flashcards I am creating, is there a way to customize the text color of words on individual cards?  The al-Kitaab curriculuum uses black or blue for MSA, green for Egyptian dialect, and purple for Syrian dialect for the same written word, that may be pronounced three different ways.  If not, then I can make a note for the differences and it will be heard in the pronunciation.

And is there an app (I have an iPhone) to synch with the desktop version for studying on the go?

Thanks again for making this so much easier than SM and Anki!

Best Regards,

Ayesha

You're welcome :-) For Mnemosyne, we really try to focus on an elegant
and easy-to-use workflow, without sacrificing flexibility.

It's SM2, actually, but I'm not sure SM11 is a much better scheduler
than SM2.

The easiest option would be to clone several card types from Vocabulary,
e.g. MSA, Egyptian, etc... and then you can colour each of them as you want.

An off-line mobile client is on the todo list, but meanwhile you can do
your mobile reviews in a browser. Just start the bundled
'mnemosyne-webserver' application, which will tell you where to point
your browser. Sound support for webserver reviews is still a bit shaky,
though.

Under Windows, it should be in the Mnemosyne group you can access
through the start menu.

Linux and probably also OSX type 'mnemosyne-webserver'

In a future version, this will be integrated with the main program, though.

Found it on Windows.
. Ran ´mnemosyne-webserver.exe´
. typed IP in browser chrome
. Got web-version of card. Neat!
. And, voila: Can do my learning in Browser on Windows

Unable to reach it from other device though. Tried from IMac and Android phone. Browser says (translated from Norwegian; "Sorry, cannot connet to (IP-adr)"
. Firewall-issue perhaps?

(this is not terribly important Peter, but I would of course love to be more device independent)

It works fine within my own home network, so in all likelihood it's
indeed a firewall issue, which Mnemosyne cannot do anything about...

Thank you - again!  I cannot tell you how refreshing this experience has been for me, especially after literally fighting with Anki 2, which makes SM15 easier by comparison, but still overwhelming with a very complex interface.

Mnemosyne is truly simple and easy to use!  :D  Now I can focus on actually learning, instead of studying code to achieve very basic 'formatting' appearance of the cards!

Hi there!

I am unsure why the Arabic text is scrunched up for a phrase?  And I thought I fixed it by checking the card type with the foreign word font as KFGQPC Nashk at 72 pt. and writing system set to Arabic.  The set up of the card displays it properly in the field, but not in preview or when reviewing.  I attached screen shots.

What do you advise, please?

Thank you.

I'm afraid this is not something Mnemosyne has direct control over: font
rendering is handled by the GUI library we use (Qt4, same as Anki BTW).

So, this is probably a bug in Qt. Perhaps you can try with a different
font. (I use Arial for arabic, and don't see any issues, apart from the
kasra being difficult to see)

Hmmm.  This is strange and I am confused.  For the word cards with 'as salaamu 'alaikum' in Arabic, it formats fine as 2 words (attached).  And I will try some more couplets (2 words) and phrases (3+ words) and see what happens.  And it is also puzzling because I was able to use this specialized font in Anki, but setting up the format (html code) is not going to work for me - I prefer formatting buttons and drop down menus.

I even tried other Arabic fonts (such as the standard Microsoft Word packaged font for Arabic called 'Arabic Typesetting') and have the same results as the first attachment.  I could use Arial for Arabic, but the script is not as nice in appearance, in my opinion.   Maybe I will just create a card type for this particular phrase using Arial font, until I figure out what is causing it?

Just an update - I created another card with the exact same phrase (one for each:  MSA, ECA, LCA), and typed each word out, and it seems to display alright now; I wonder if I copied and pasted the scrunched up one?  Unsure.  But it seems to be working for now.  Thanks!

It might be related to copy and paste, but if it is, it's possible
that it only displays scrunched up right after pasting, and not when
the card is actually reviewed. That's an issue I still need to solve.

I am unsure.  I had another scrunched up word after typing it out and remembered that for the exact same word, the something similar occured in Anki in the 'editing' section, but it displayed almost perfectly in the preview/review - it just had a small space between two letters that should have been seamlessly joined, but it is a minor issue.

And in Mnemosyne, it is not displaying correctly in either editing or preview/review screens.

Screen shots are attached for both SRS that may be helpful for you?

I think Mnemosyne uses a later version of Qt than Anki, so I guess it's a Qt bug in the recent version.

Again, It's not something Mnemosyne can do anything about, I'm afraid...

Thank you.  How do I contact the Qt4 developer to let them know about this issue, please, so they can hopefully fix it?  I googled Qt4 and have no idea what I am looking for.  :S  And what do I tell them exactly, because I am only an end user and not a programmar - unsure what Qt4 and GUI are and how Mnemosyne and Anki use them?

I am currently making flashcards for Alif Baa 3e, and on Unit 2 (of 10); and once completed over the next week, I will work on al-Kitaab 3e, Part 1.  I am concerned this issue will occur more frequently as I make more complex cards for couplets, phrases, and sentences.

A longer term project I am working on involves creating flashcards for each and every word in the Qur'aan (which has 604 pages worth of words!), along with a soundclip (that are being professionally recorded).  It would basically be one word per card, with the 'Question' as Arabic text copied from a MS-Word document with the KFGQPC Hafs script (based on handwritten calligraphy) from, along with a soundclip:

King Fahd Glorious Quran Printing Complex, released "Quranic Font" with complete typed Data of Quran in MS Word file.

Its free Unicode based OTF Font, and complete typed Data you can distribute and forward it to anyone. Website link is;

For Direct Download Word Data file
http://fonts.qurancomplex-dev.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Complete-Ver08.zip

[I just realized the above site 'has been suspended' which I am certain is temporary and will be back online soon.  I will contact a colleague who works there and find out more about it, because I will need to download the latest font version and document than that from above.]

And the 'answer' side of the card would contain the information for each word as seen below (the image, and pronunciation in transliteration, translation, and grammatical information, with a tag of the numbers with colons between them indicating the location of the word in the Surah and ayah, and perhaps I will also add the page number for each word, which is not listed here:

I also was given some general information about how to import from the data source:  http://corpus.quran.com/download/ into Anki, and wonder how would I import it into Mnemosyne?

Please let me know how to contact the developer of Qt4 because it is important for me, that this bug to resolved as soon as possible.

Thank you again.

I just found a temporary work around after I noticed that the word seems to be scrunching up after typing a letter following the letter 'raa' - ر .

I typed:  حَضرَ  for part of a word and after I added the next letter after 'raa' ر , is when it pushed the preceding letters of the word, to the far right.  So I added a space after 'raa'  ر , and then typed the rest of the word [ تُكَ ] and then deleted the space between the raa and the taa and it seemed to work and looks fine.

I then tried the same technique of adding a space after the letter 'raa' in the other word 'marHabaa', and then deleted it to see if it would align correctly, but it did not.  For the time being, I will have to leave a space in the middle of the word 'marHabaa' so it is readable, instead of scrunched up, although it is technically incorrect.

I * think * the letter following 'raa' needs to have a diacritic to anchor preceeding letters in place, but unsure at this moment.

I will update this thread with other observations and examples, for others who also work with an Arabic based font.

I am happy to have also found additional videos using the Alif Baa 3rd edition vocabulary (by unit) in context, that are useful as an additional learning resource:

How can I add these videos to flashcards?  Just save them and attach?  And then translation as the answer card?

You may embed them or save them to your disk. To embed them just click on the 'Share' button under the youtube video and copy the text to your card. Will look something like this:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/uRa9fN-6hDs?list=PL25815DF81C77FC4A&amp;hl=nb_NO" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

For saving them to your disk you may use a plugin for your browser. Then just attach the video to your card and copy the translation in a new card.

Hi,

There is not a single Qt developer, it's a big project.

Anyway, I noticed that just last week a new version was released:
http://www.riverbankcomputing.co.uk/news

I'll package a test version of Mnemosyne with this updated library, so
that you can see if it fixes things.

As for import, not sure what Anki instructions you got, but Mnemosyne
supports import from txt files where the question and the answer are
separated by a tab.

Hi there.

I see.  Thank you.
I also experienced the same shifting/scrunching up of a word with letters/words following "waaw" و , when used as a connector (meaning 'and' or used as an oath'), which when written, does not have a space between it and the following word, although they are technically two separate words, they are always written together.  And I added a space following it, typed the rest of the word and deleted the space, and it corrected itself.

I am currently working on Unit 3 and hope to complete it today.  I am also waiting to hear back from the publisher to see if I have permission to upload my flashcard sets with their soundclips (that may be copywritten).  I hope they will grant it - and in the meantime, I am also waiting to hear back from Critical Language Services to learn more about http://www.criticallanguageservice.com/courses/independent .  They require "a digital flashcard program," and I mentioned that I am using Mnemosyne.

Will keep you posted.

Thanks!

If that does not work, I'll open a Qt bug report for you. Just to summarise, the issue with the font 'Arabic Typesetting', but 'Arial' works fine, and the problem both shows in the input field (i.e. when typing in the words) and when previewing/reviewing the cards?

Thank you!  If I download and install this, will it overwrite the current version?

I also found out from my colleague in Saudi Arabia that works with the KFGQPC (King Fahd Glorious Qur'an Printing Complex, in Madinah) who is a font expert, that the issue is related to the following:

We have some special kerning pairs with (Raay, Zaay, Daal, Zaal and wao), when Mostly characters come after they characters, we define kerning pairs for them, so that is the problem, that your program have problem to adjust "Cursive Attachment" a featue of Opentype, with this bring move the character coming after raay, wao, etc to a little right so the looks beautiful kern. So there may be a problem in software handling OTF.

Is there a way for Qt4 to handle OTF?

Thanks!

Hi,

The new version will overwrite the old program, but not your data obviously.

The extra info from your colleague is useful to narrow things down, and
a quick search reveals the following bug reports, which might be related:
https://bugreports.qt-project.org/browse/QTBUG-8207

And to a lesser extent:
https://bugreports.qt-project.org/browse/QTBUG-12799

Feel free to add to the first bug report and mention the font you have
issues with.

Actually, because of some other Qt bugs, videos currently only work
under Linux.

Therefore, under Windows, I use mplayer as an alternative for audio. I
can add a similar workaround for video, but it won't be very pretty,
i.e. the videos will play in an external window.

Hmmm.  I can just create a flashcard as a reminder to watch each of the video segments by Unit from the cd-rom directly and then 'grade' myself for comprehension.  And I can already include the other audio files from the cd-rom and they work.  I wonder if and how I could just strip the audio from the video and attach it in the flashcard?  I am unable to do it with Real Player for some technical reason I don't understand.  What is mplayer?  Can I strip the audio  from the video with it?

I believe windows move maker can do audio stripping. Otherwise you could see if you could find a freeware program at download.com.
Video was supported in mnemosyne as far as I know, but not all types worked. You could try to make flash do the video playback, but this is a bit more technical as you need to convert the videos to another format.

Thanks.  I had problems with WMM.  So I searched and found this online converter that is working pretty well:  http://media.io/

I will just use the audio of the video segments because I don't need to see it, I just need to hear it and 'rate' my understanding.

Another question.  I am attempting to type Arabic/Indic (Hindi) numbers that are used in the Middle East.  I followed these instructions, but it is not working in Mnemosyne?

Do I have to change my regional settings to Arabic for the Hindi numbers to be used in Mnemosyne?  I am concerned that it will be a challenge to navigate my computer and programs in Arabic.  Maybe I will make some images for the numbers?

Any suggestions, please?  Thank you.

Hi Mr. Peter,

I upgraded with the 2.1 and still have the same kerning issue.  I looked at the bug reports, and am unsure how to add to them?  I also did a search using "kerning ott font" and found this report:

I am thinking for the Qur'anic ayah (verse) cards with translation that I will make, it is easiest to just copy/paste from the document directly into Mnemosyne, if the kerning issue can be fixed.  Otherwise, I will have to re-adjust every .ppt slide I created as 6" x 22" down to a smaller size and smaller font, which is time consuming, and then creating PNG files and adding them to each card.

If I am able to copy/paste directly, it would also be nice if there were a way to select 'automatic' font size adjustment for a card type (this is a feature available in BrillKids Little Reader software); and I created a separate thread for that issue.

Thank you.

You need to register a new account on the Qt bug site first.

I really would not suggest doing the PNG work. Apart from being a lot of
work, it would also mean losing the ability to search for words in the
card browser.

What I'd suggest doing is switching to a different arabic font, and then
once Qt fixes the kerning issue (could be a while though), you can move
all your cards to the new font with just a few mouse clicks...

Hmmm.   Searching through the card browser is less of concern for me, because I can use tags of "The Surah or Chapter number :: the Ayah or verse number :: and possibly the page number and/or other divisional marks" to easily locate what I am searching for (which I don't even know how to search in Mnemosyne yet because I have not needed to).

And I wish it were as easy as just switching between fonts for text, but it is not, because some fonts have unique key stroke patterns for certain letter/syllable combinations, that will not appear correctly in other fonts.

Sometime ago, I did use SM15 for testing purposes of a few short suwar (chapters) and it displays alright, but I have to copy the text to a separate document and enlarge it before copying/pasting into SM - but setting up the formatting or templates of the 'cards' is still a bit of a mystery to me, the interface is less than user friendly, and the yahoo group  is less than active, a very few tutorials for exactly what I need.

I really prefer using Mnemosyne.  I also asked my (font professional) colleague in KSA to see if he can communicate with the QT group, but it will be after the Hajj and 'Eid al-Adha vacation.  In the meantime, I will continue with Alif Baa vocabulary that are coming along nicely!  :)

Thank you again.

Best Regards,

Ayesha

Good Afternoon All,

I having been trying to find a solution to the Qur'anic flashcards (created in ppt) dilemma for sometime now.  And I think I found a substitute until the QT4 kerning issue is resolved for some Arabic fonts. Out of frustration, I googled "ppt and SRS" and was pleasantly surprised to have discovered this software that apparently uses .ppt slides - although I am unsure how it will work - just downloaded it, but excited that the possibility is there:

Hi Everyone,

I am in the process of copying/pasting 'Arabic Word-of-the-Day' (modern standard) phrases, audio, and translations from the archives here:

http://www.bitesizedlanguages.com/wod/r/arabic-modern-standard

And I am happy to have finally found an Arabic font that works very well in Mnemosyne, which is called 'Traditional Arabic'.
