I have been using Mnemosyne for about 4 years. Only this morning did i upgrade to version 2.0. I checked carefully whether i needed to uninstall the old version first. I also checked carefully whether i needed to do something with the big database i have on Mnemosyne. Nothing was stated anywhere, to my knowledge.
I downloaded 2.0 and got the message to close all other application. I did.
Upon installation i wanted to run Mnemosyne to see what the change were. Wel, i was very much SOL. This was the message i got:

message re Visual C++ Runtime Library:

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Then i went to see what programs/things were installed with 2.0 and i found Mnemosyne Webserver. It gave the message Fatal Python Error. Interprete not initialized (version mismatch?)

Btw, i run Windows 7.

I have the feeling that i should have uninstalled the old version first. Nothing was said about thsi though. I didn't because i had hoped that all the data and the grading of all the cards would transfer over smoothly to 2.0. I guess i was mistaken. Ha, ha, ha!

Any solution other than uninstalling everything and reinstalling 2.0? This is an issue for me because yeah i have all the data in the Backups but it will take me endless fiddling to get the data to be shown in Mnemosyne the way i am used to it.

Myself and a few others had the same problem. Indeed, the solution is to uninstall Mnemosyne 1 and then run the 2.0 installer again ... other than that issue, 2.0 should have no problems with your old data.

Well, in the meantime i have already deinstalled the old version and installed the new one. After some tinkering i discovered that my entire database was there and seem to be intact. What a relief! But there are still a few issues:

I keep getting the message that the DATABASE IS LOCKED.

I have a database of 13,500 (only words); this is divided in about 15 categories. In the old version on the second menu item, called Deck, i could see all the categories and specify which one i wanted to work with. I don't see categories anymore. In the new version i am stuck with a bunch of cards in a category that i have not used yet and i can't seem to get out of it.

Somehow, somewhere i saw a layout of the deck and it was a tremendous improvement. I am just not yet at the stage of enjoying the enhancement because i am unable to get the basics to work. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

I have been playing with the Browse Cards feature but it appears you can only look at this. I tried to untick most of the categories to end up with something similar to the Select Category in the old Mnemosyne version but this doesn't work. I am very anxious to hear how to select the category of cards/words you want to work with.

Okay, i got it! Under Card, go to Edit Card and there you can change the tag (category)。

Did you follow the complete instructions I posted in the other thread? Especially try restarting: my guess is that the webserver you tried out is still running in the background.

Also look at 'Activate cards' to study only cards with a certain tag.

I have been working with Mnemosyne version 2 for the past two days and everything is working fine. Peter asked whether i followed the complete instructions in the "other thread." I don't know where this thread is. My suggestion is to show a link in the Download area to any issues one might encounter when upgrading, such as the necessity to uninstall the old version of Mnemosyne, and also what to expect. Since there were no comments showing, i just hit Download and then experienced a bit of a panic attack when i ran into problems (to be cautious i had not uninstalled the old version and that was exactly what was causing the problems).

I meant the reply to the other post you made:

I've added this to the download page. Also, in the changelog notes for
the next version, I will always add that it's recommended to uninstall
the previous version. (BTW, personally I never needed to uninstall the
previous version, and I'm not sure what the reason is.)

Never panic :-)

Thanks for the feedback and improving the upgrade experience for future
users!

Today I am encountering a bit of a problem:
I am in a category that has, say, 20 scheduled cards. I go through the cards and answer them. The number 20, however, remains unchanged. When i deactivate this category and come back to it later after having done another category, the number 20 is now replaced by the number of cards remaining. This issue happens with all the categories. I had the same happening earlier this week and then I discovered that two categories had been activated. I deactivated one and then the program counted correctly. I don't see why the program could not handle two or more activated categories. So, it may have been a complete fluke that the counting resumed as it should have. Today, i looked at categories activated and each time only category had been activated.
This is not an end-of-the-world problem but it would be nice if i knew how to fix it. Thank you!

Are you sure you were not accidentally looking at the number of
non-memorised cards?

If it happens again, just mail your 'default.db' file, and I will look
into it.

Cheers,

Peter

Peter, I am just about certain that i did not look at the non-memorised cards. The categories i had to review were indeed the ones i had been studying. The number of scheduled cards for those categories seemed just about what i expected them to be. Except, the number of scheduled did not go down at all. What i had to do was deactivate the category i had been working on, activate another one, then go back to the earlier category to see yeah, it was now zero or close to zero. This happened for all five categories i had been studying. I logged off from Mnemosyne completely several times but the problem was still there when i opened Mnemosyne again and worked on the scheduled cards in those five categories. The interesting thing was that when i went back to Mnemosyne yesterday, everything was fine!

Just now i am starting with Mnemosyne and the problem has come back. I see a number of cards scheduled but the number does not change at all when i am going through the scheduled cards.

You suggested in your last email to send you the default file. I tried to export the database but the export facility refuses to SAVE the file to whatever folder i want to assign to it. Btw, i could not even assign a specific file to export. All the export option showed was "Mnemosyne 2x *card.files." So, i cannot export files. That is also a problem as in the past i often exported files for various reasons.

As an aside, i noticed with the new version that one cannot activate more than one category.  This was feasible in the old version and it came in very handy at times.

Other than these two issues everything is working fine. I hope you will be able to figure out  what is going on here.  Thanks, Peter!

Note: i am not used to Google Groups and am not always sure my posts got posted or double posted or whatever. Apologies!

Hi,

You don't need to export to a db file, that is the standard file
Mnemosyne uses to store its data. It's typically called default.db and
located in C:\users\notsohappy\application data\Mnemosyne

You should definitely be able to activate more than one tag (and save
that selection to a new saved set if you want). However, you can only
activate one saved set at the time.

Hope this helps,

Peter

I do know what the default file is but that's what you asked me to send if the problem persisted. As it turns out, i cannot export ANY file, i.e. ANY category. This is problematic to me as well.
This morning i did my daily drill. Surprise, surprise, several categories worked fine. It showed the number of cards scheduled and then that count went down correctly as i was answering and rating the cards. Then, i come to the last category to do and i am getting Cards Not Memorized! I Even though the category i wanted, which i had titled Default2 a long time ago, was properly ticked off and nothing else.
I really don't understand these inconsistencies from day to day and it is becoming a little tiring.

Okay, i fixed the issue of getting Cards Not  Memorized. It was the first thing this happened and it was caused by accidentally flipping the shaded box that says "having any of these tags" to "not having any of these tags." Exporting files still is not possible.

OK, good!

Can you be more precise? What happens if you try to export a file, e.g.
to the Mnemosyne 2.x cards format?

If you don't have any cards scheduled in that category today, the
learning process will start showing you new material right away, so
that's perfectly normal.

If you encounter anything that you find surprising, close the program,
mail me the default.db file immediately (i.e. don't continue to do lots
of repetitions such that I cannot observe the issue anymore), tell me in
detail what you expected to happen and what happens instead.

Cheers,

Peter
