By default the USB connection when Android development is activated on the device is MTP (Media Transfer Protocol). The aiStarter on my Windows 7 system does not connect with the Android Galaxy S7 until the USB-configuration in the developer settings is changed to RNDIS (USB-Ethernet)
Can not see this mentioned in the appinventor USB help section connect-USB-win

The corresponding instruction is Step 5 of this document: http://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/ai2/setup-device-usb.html, specifically "be sure that the device connects as a "mass storage device" (not "media device")". However, this could probably be written a little bit better given that there are now multiple USB modes whereas originally there were only two options.
