Mumbai, May 11 (pti) Leads provided by a call made on a
cellular phone helped the city police track down the killer of
Jayant Jadhav, a close friend of Shiv Sena Chief Mr Bal
Thackeray, and arrest eight persons involved in implementation
of the murder conspiracy, which was hatched in the Aurangabad
prison by the jailed underworld kingpin Arun Gawli.
"Intelligent" analysis of the telephone data on the basis
of eye-witness accounts of the use of a cellular phone by the
killer, Sanjay Shridhar Kate, led to the arrest of owner of
"Sarathi Video", Lalit Pravinchandra Shah (37), an active
member of the Gawli Gang, who had taken directives from the
Kingpin to execute the conspiracy at a meeting in the prison
on April 23, assistant commissioner of police, Mr Ranjit
Sharma, told a press here today conference.
Mr Sharma said shah and another accused pralhad
ramchandra jadhav alias raja revealed during interrogation
that the murder conspiracy was hatched "because of Arun
Gawli's perception that the deceased was instrumental in his
(Gawli) transfer from Aurangabad jail to Amravati central
prison and Gawli apprehended that he would be shot dead or
attacked by the rival gang during transit from Aurangabad".
Jayant, who owned m/s aditya video, was fatally shot at
through a .45 revolver by the then unknown accused on april 30
last in the parking lot of Kamdar Park Compound at Dadar in
Central Mumbai and another accused, Ram Gadale, fired from a
The others arrested are Shyam Dhumal, a resident of Gawli
Gang headquarters "Dagdi Chawl", Sunil Ghate, Vivekanand Naik
and Santosh Adivlekar. All the accused have been remanded to
15 days' police custody.
Mr Sharma said the revolver, pistol, cellular phone and
the black Yamaha RX 100 motorcycle used by the shooters to
flee from the scene have been seized.
He said Shah was an active member of the Gawli gang
especially with regard to settling disputed matters and was in
direct touch with Arun Gawli and his henchmen and was a
regular visitor to the kingpin at Aurangabad jail as well as
Dagdi Chawl.
He said shan got introduced to Jayant Jadhav through one
Mahendra Joshi, classmate of Vivek Jadhav, under the pretext
of seeking help for some dispute with regard to landed
properties in Bandra and Borivali and utilised the visit to
explain the location of the deceased's residence to the
shooters who carried out the killing operation, which was
planned and organised by Sunil Ghate and Pralhad Jadhav, who
is also a resident of Dagdi Chawl.
Further investigation of the case was being carried out
under the direct supervision of the city police commissioner,
Mr R D Tyagi, Mr Sharma said.
