2004ஆம் ஆண்டு தமிழகத்தைச் சுனாமி தாக்கியது. ஆனால் இதைப்போலப் பல ஆயிரம் மடங்கு பெரிதான மிகப்பெரிய இரண்டு சுனாமிகள் அடுத்தடுத்துத் தோன்றி பாண்டியநாட்டைத் தாக்கி அழித்துள்ளன. அந்நிகழ்ச்சியை ஊழிக்காலம், பிரளயம், கடல்வெள்ளம் என்று திருவிளையாடல் புராணம் ஆலவாய் காண்டத்தில் விரிவாகக் கூறுகிறது. இவ்வாறு ஊழிக்காலத்தில் பிரளயத்தில் தோன்றிய கடல்வெள்ளம் மதுரையை மைய இலக்காகக் கொண்டு தாக்கியது என்றும், மதுரைத் தாக்கி அளிக்குமாறு இந்திரன் ஆணையிட்டான் என்றும் புராணம் குறிப்பிடுகிறது.
“பொரும் கடல் வேந்தனைக் கூவிப் பொன் என
இரும் கடல் உடுத்த பார் ஏழும் ஊழிநாள்
ஒருங்கு அடு வெள்ளம் ஒத்து உருத்துப் போய் வளைந்து
அரும் கடி மதுரையை அழித்தியால் என்றான்“
- திருவிளையாடற் புராணம்.
இந்திரனது ஏவலால் மதுரையைக் கடல் அழித்துள்ளது. இதன் காரணமாகத்தான் சிலப்பதிகாரத்தில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ள சிறப்பான இந்திரவிழா நின்றுபோய் விட்டது போலும். மதுரையை அழித்த இந்திரனை எந்தத் தமிழன் போற்றுவான்!
