Just read a great quote from ChiVinMoto: "This facebook presence is an unfortunate dilution of the content that belongs on the actual ChiVinMoto mailing list.  You should head over to Google groups and check out the original list.  That's where all the real information is."

Here in Milwaukee there are a lot of people that have 'joined' the MilVinMoto facebook page and there are twice as many that are on the Google Group for MilVinMoto.  Even with the hundreds of people that are part of these lists, there are only a handful of posts by a handful of posters.  Has MilVinMoto become a stale list?  Has fb made it so nobody goes to Google Groups anymore?  With fb, people aren't posting there either.  If video didn't kill the radio star, fb would have.  Problem is, fb itself is ineffective as a list tool for a group like this.  Anybody agree / disagree?  (Or even care?)

My 2 cents - I have a love/hate with The Facebook. Nice to keep up with real friends and family, if it weren't for events listed there I could easily leave ( I use Google + more for following businesses, news, etc. as the ui is way better). Regardless of thoughts on FB, the issue is having 2 sources/media and dilution of both because of it.

I would recommend having just the GoogleGroup for discussion but for a FB presence make it a simpler Page just to advertise the group (reference and link to the GoogleGroup) communicate things like events, etc. from an owner(s) of the page than an expectation of discussion among members/followers.

Thanks for the feedback Kevin!  Now that you mentioned it, I looked at the settings in fb and it can be used as an informational space that directs people to the Google Group.  Did not realize that was possible.  Hmmmm, will need to discuss further...anybody else?

I haven't checked my facebook in about 3 months, but i know there are a lot of people who really like that interface, especially because they like to have smartphones glued to their faces whilst running over motorcyclists or holding up traffic in the turn lane or ignoring their screaming children in a crowded restaurant.

I guess for the people that like that interface, its a more direct, efficient, addictive means of communication. I've thought about it a lot because I post on this list all the time and i know lots of other people don't... unless i offend them and draw them out of the woodwork.

My conclusion is that because this list is being force-fed into everyone's inbox, people feel like posting whatever nonsense drivel that comes pouring out of their brain (as i do), is an imposition, some how rude because its being blasted out to everyone. Especially for those folks who don't get digest form or are on AOL hearing 'you've got mail' everytime I make a stupid comment.

Whereas Facebook is a more passive, socially acceptable way of blasting opinions into other peoples faces.

I dunno, I like the mailing list. Its kinda goofy and the recent updates to the digest format are pretty nice. Since moving to a foreign country (texas) it reminds me of all you lovely folks back in milwaukee who don't consider vintage motorcycles to be a fashion accessory.  I'm just gonna keep posting dumb crap until someone boots me or tells me to knock it off or maybe a combination of the two.

I would LOVE love love to see more people posting specific tech questions, stuff like 'hey does anyone have a clutch perch to fit a 1989 KTM 600LC4?' kinda things.. I think thats what really drew me to this list in the first place, and that kind of stuff builds real life community. I worry that people not seeing it happening makes them think that they shouldn't upset the great and powerful list with their petty troubles.

A-MEN BROTHER!

On that note, does anyone know where to buy a Braxton (starter) rebuild kit for an '88 Yamaha Virago 1100?    Once I get my mitts on that, maybe I can host a tech night where we figure out how to install it!  :-)

Thanks for the support Gwenn!

Have you tried ViragoOwnersClub.org to see if they have any suggestions?  These bikes are known for having starter issues, so lots of people must have had to source the parts you need.  Let us know when you plan to host a garage nite!

It seems from the responses that the consensus is to set fb up as an informational location, (like the MilVinMoto website) and focus on pushing the traffic to Google Groups.  If there becomes an issue with too much off-topic, it can be addressed at that time.  Any other thoughts? Hoping to take multiple vantage points into account and have a stronger community.

So, who is ready to host a garage nite?

Some of you may have noticed the MilVinMoto fb page has been changed to no longer allow posting. The intent is to bring all MilVin traffic back to one place....Google Groups. Hopefully this will strengthen the list instead of having multiple posts that not everybody has access to. Remember, the list is what we all make of it and is here to support this non-club in our love of vintage motorcycles in and around the Milwaukee area. Viva Milwaukee Vintage Motorcyclists!

Who wants to host an upcoming Garage Nite? Here is what is on deck:

September 16 - Brian B - Mequon
September 23 - Open
September 30 - Open
October 7 - Open
October something - Darci

This deal doesn't just happen, you need to volunteer to host a garage nite!

My friend Michael, who came out to TWALD with me, is going to try to make it to Brian's garage night tomorrow.

He's got a shop space in Port Washington where my '64 Fiat 500, some old Minis, and a bunch of other neat stuff lives. He's been thinking about hosting a garage night. I know Port is a little out there, but if you've ever wanted to see a White Company Motorcar from the early 1900s... here's your chance. He's got a couple bikes there too.

I live in Sheboygan. Port Washington would be easier for my wife and me to
visit than those "close" Milwaukee area garages. You can count us in for a
Port moto-garage night.
