Hello
Lisa and I conducted the final field trip for the Audubon Society
of Corvallis' Birding by Ear class today. The goal for the day was
to cover forest birds, and we visited McDonald Forest from the Oak
Creek trailhead. While the weather was great and we got most of
the expected forest birds...what we didn't expect was a flock of
about 20 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS that soared by about 500 feet
above us. I don't know where they were going or where they came
from.
We got to see a PILEATED WOODPECKER return to her nest cavity,
where she fed one of the 3/4-grown nestlings (who was begging and
poking its head out of the hole). A WILLOW FLYCATCHER was singing
from a clearing about 1/2 mile from the parking lot.
We encountered some common forest birds:
Northern Flicker
Band-tailed Pigeon
Rufous Hummingbird
Pacific-slope Flycatcher
Willow Flycatcher
American Robin
Swainson's Thrush
Cedar Waxwing
Steller's Jay
Common Raven
Chestnut-backed Chickadee
Pacific Wren
Warbling Vireo
Wilson's Warbler
Orange-crowned Warbler
Black-throated Gray Warbler
Western Tanager
Song Sparrow
Chipping Sparrow
Dark-eyed Junco
Purple Finch
Red Crossbill
American Goldfinch
Lesser Goldfinch
Black-headed Grosbeak
Spotted Towhee
