We cannot get past the MAPI failure with Word 2007 when we try to send a file
as an attachment from Word. Also, the same function in Excel gives us a
general mail failure. I cannot find a resolution. The exact message in Word
2007 is "Word couldn't send mail because of MAPI failure: "Operation not
supported"."

Outlook 2007. We have the Office 2007 Enterprise suite installed.

OK, we found a work-around. We went into the browser (IE7) and changed the
email client to Outlook Express (which was not configured on the PC) - Tools,
Internet Options, Programs, E-Mail:. We then opened word and tried to send
the file as an attachment. We went all the way thru the Outlook Express
setup that was brought up and it then prepared to send the email. We closed
the email and word. We went back into the browser and changed the email
client to be Microsoft Office Outlook and the process now works correctly in
Word 2007 and Excel 2007.

I am having the same problem, Word 2007 and Outlook 2007, however,
when I tried the Outlook Express workaround it did not fix the issue.
It reverted back to the MAPI error as soon as I changed the default
mail program back to Outlook. Any ideas?

I also encountered that again after I posted the work-around. Very
dissapointed the next day when that happened. All I did was change the email
client to Outlook Express save, close and then went back in and changed it to
Outlook and it worked again. Surely Microsoft will figure out which file is
getting messed up in this process. I know one of our staff tried deleting
some MAPI files and that didn't work either.

I have the same exact problem. I've tried CathyW's solution and it worked as
long as I had OE listed as my email, and it threw the error again as soon as
I switched back. If I expand the "Show Help" in the error dialog, it says:
-------
This error can occur if you attempt to send a Word document as an e-mail
attachment in Word and the MAPI session was closed and Word is no longer able
to connect to that MAPI session. It can also occur if there is a problem with
the fax configuration.

To correct a MAPI related error: restart the MAPI e-mail program (for
example,Outlook) or save and close the document, and then restart Word after
restarting your MAPI e-mail application. Word will establish a new MAPI
session, allowing the document to be sent.
-------
No matter how many times I restart things, I get the same error. I'm running
XPSP2 and Office 2007 Enterprise in an Exchange 2003 environment.

Has anyone found a resolution to this issue??

I too am having the same issue. All of your symptoms exist on my system,
whereas several weeks ago they did not!

I originally had a problem due to MAPI conflicts between Outlook and my
Exchange System Tools (to manage ADUC mailboxes). After uninstalling the
exchange tools, and repairing my MAPI32.DLL file (fixmapi), everything
returned to normal.

Now for some reason, out of nowhere, it stopped working again. Nothing I do
can seem to fix it.

On top of the issues already reported here, I have additional ones.

If I have Microsoft Outlook closed, my other office program can send email
fine. I can also use the Send to -> Mail recipient context menu option from
within explorer with no issue.

If I have Microsoft Outlook open, everything breaks except Outlook itself!

What is the deal MS?! Your own apps can't play well together.

I'm on XPSP2, Office 2007 Enterprise, IE7, Exchange 2003 with Cached Mode
enabled.

I have the same problem with Word and Excel. I have tried the IE option,
office diagnostic, I have un-installed the program and re-installed it.

I have noticed that I closed Outlook it sometimes works.

I just want it to work!

Help!

The only solution I have run across is to remove Exchange System tools
completely, thereby removing the conflict in mapi32.dll. I never really used
the System Manager program. I do however still require the use of managing
Exchange tasks from within ADUC. There are ways to get the Exchange
functions without installing the exchange tools.

Here are the instructions I've used to do this (note: this works with VISTA
too)

---------------------------------------------
Using ADUC without installing Exchange System Manager

(even works with Windows Vista)

Copying the following files from your exchange server's \exchsrvr\bin or
\windows\system32 directory to your system within \windows\system32 (you'll
need elevated privilages if you still have on UAC on in Vista):

address.dll
escprint.dll
exchmem.dll
glblname.dll
maildsmx.dll
pttrace.dll
netui0.dll
netui1.dll
netui2.dll

Finally:

run regsvr32 \windows\system32\maildsmx.dll from a command prompt.

I am also running Office 2007 Enterprise, IE7, Exchange 2003 w/Exchange
tools installed on XP SP3 - was SP2 and the new SP didnt help...

I corrected the issue for a few days by deleting my outlook profile,
most commonly listed as "Default Outlook Profile" I then recreated it
and i could sent doc's to email from word and right clicking on files
and selecting sent to Mail Recipient, but alas after a few days, maybe
after reboot, it broke again....

arghhhh.

I have noticed that no one has mentioned how Outlook was setup, is it in
Cached Exchange Mode? I am curious if anyone has been able to resolve
the problem, how their Outlook was setup, and what was done to fix the
issue.

And that problem would be exactly?

Either use a real news reader and the msnews.microsoft.com news server or
quote what you are referencing from whatever forsaken forum you are slurping
from.

Well Miss Milly Staples MVP, considering I am replying to a thread
concerning Word 2007 MAPI failure: "Operation not supported" I thought
it was pretty self evident what "problem" I was referencing.

I really don't appreciate your tone, considering I have not seen a
resolution to this problem, and I am working to find a fix for it, as
one of my end users has recently started experiencing the same issue.
Your resolution did not work for this client as well as others, from
what I have read.

I would recommend doing your MVP a little justice and withhold the
negativity spewing from your mouth or in this case your fingers.

Just like your parents should have told you, "If you don't have
anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all"

I suspect your problem stems from the fact you are corresponding through
a "techarena" leach site, which is relayed back to the real newsgroup on
the news server. This for instance appears as a completely new thread
after the transfer.

Disjointed posts with no references wastes my time as well as others.
Whenever you respond to whatever post appears in Techarena (one of the worst
for this type of behavior), ONLY your post appears unless you purposely
append the post to which you are replying.

Having said that, use a real news reader or subscribe to the
msnews.microsoft.com news server to prevent disjointed, unreferenced posts
and save us all the trouble.

This is a bit odd. I use a news reader, get messages only from
msnews.microsoft.com but I see House's post as a reply threaded directly below
CasperX's question re "Word 2007 MAPI failure: "Operation not supported:" ...
my newsreader (VA) sees it not as a disjointed post.

In fact, House's post includes:

References: <6625E1CC-1E95-4BA4...@microsoft.com>
<CasperX...@DoNotSpam.com>
Newsgroups: microsoft.public.office.misc

Any idea why the difference in what we're seeing?

I faced the same error with one of my users and I found two versions of
Office (Outlook) installed on the user's PC (WinXP, SP2)

First of all, when I browsed the location "C:/Program files/common
files/system/" I found two Mapi folders (which I figured would mean two
versions of outlook existing at the same time). Renamed all the
MSMAPI32.dll files. On restarting outlook, found that it was installing
Outlook 2002 again. I cancelled this operation and Removed Outlook 2002
from Add remove programs.

Ran a MS office Diagnostics and also re-configured the mail profile.
Tried sending the word document as a mail attachment again and it
worked!!

I was searching for some sort of a solution to this problem and thought
I'd post my new found solution in case it comes of some use!! :)

Cheers!

Found this thread while looking for a solution to this problem one of
our users was facing.

Figured I would share my solution just in case this is still a problem
to others.

I found there were 2 instances of Office installed on this system - 2007
Basic and Small Business Server 2003 (Powerpoint ONLY). I uninstalled
Office 2003 altogether and Repaired Office 2007 using the installation
files. This and a reboot resolved the issue.
