Try to think of the FreezePanes command as creating a picture frame around
your WS that only has a top and/or left side. The WS (picture) can scroll
up or down or left or right, but the frame remains static (frozen).
The main rule to remember in using the FreezePanes command is:
Everything above and to the left of the selected cell will become static
(frozen - the picture frame).
The next rule to remember is that:
What "exactly" (rows and/or columns) becomes static depends on the screen
view at the time of the instigation of the FreezePanes command.
Never select A1 or the cell in the A1 position in any screen view. It'll
just confuse you (selects the cell in the middle of the screen view).
In the normal WS view, if you select B1 and invoke FreezePanes (FP),
everything above (nothing in this case) and to the left (all of column A)
will be frozen.
If you had selected A2, everything above (all of row 1) and to the left
(nothing in this case) would have been frozen.
If you had selected B2, everything above (all of row 1) and to the left (all
of column A) would become static.
Just keep in mind that the selected cell at the time of the FP command is
the top left corner of your picture.
The use of <Ctrl> + <Home> will always take you to the selected, corner
cell.
If your WS should happen to have a logo or a letterhead with addresses and
phone numbers that take up valuable screen space, you could simply exclude
them from the screen view without excluding them from the print area by
using the FP command.
Scroll your WS so that cell C15 is in the A1 position in your screen view.
Now select cell D17 and invoke FP.
Everything above and to the left of your screen view at the time of the
instigation of the FP command is now excluded from view. You cannot scroll
to them.
They can still be in your print area (unlike hidden cells).
The only way to view them is to "UnfreezePanes".
This should give you a little more insight into FreezePanes.
