Scope mounts

Is there any alternative scope mount to Mauser's own bridge mount for the M03? Other makers make mounts for Blasers , which have their own unique mount, but there does not seem to be anyone else making for the M03.

I searched extensively for alternative mounts when doing my research on the M03 system, before ordering. I did find an alternative, which I think was also available on eBay. Let me dig into my records. Back soon.

Hmm, the alternative mounts I remember seeing a few years ago are not jumping out at me. The eBay record I found, from a seller called lelljuks88, is old and has no images attached. Could be a dead end.

So I went and had a look at the MAK site http://www.maknetic.de/de/home/

and opened their PDF catalogue, to find an M03 mount for Docter sights on page 37. http://www.mak.ag/out/Katalog_englisch.pdf

All of which is not very helpful. :-|

I decided to buy the Mauser Double Square Mounts after researching the resulting scope mounting heights and satisfying myself that I would be happy with how they looked and sat above the receiver, at least with 30mm scopes. shows how a few different sized scopes with 30mm tubes look with the standard height 30mm M03 mounts. I've found the scope height above the stock's cheek rest to be just fine. Not quite as low as some varmint rifles I have, but this little bit of extra height with the M03 means that the stock doesn't slam into my cheekbone with heavy recoiling calibres. I'm small of stature - 172cm - so bigger dudes should find the cheek rest to scope centre distance to be a bit more snug than me, which should work well.

For my 34mm tube Kahles K624i I sourced some Blaser R93 34mm rings, which fit perfectly onto the Mauser M03 Double Square Mount and keep the scope as low as possible. The trick here is to consider the protrusion of the scope's turret housing below the tube. The K624i was an ideal fit. A Schmidt and Bender 5x25 might not be, meaning that Mauser's original 34mm rings might be needed, or the spacers they make to ensure sufficient clearance.

If I find the alternative M03 mounts I've seen before, I'll update this thread, but I'm not hopeful. :-)

Royal, I've received some intel via email. Have a look at this site for HG Firearms. They make a Picatinny/STANAG rail that fits the Mauser M03. The pictures are generic and don't show the connection method, but we might see a better picture posted here soon.

The Danish company HG firearms makes a picatinny rail solution that I would have chosen, if I hadn't purchased a Zeiss scope with rail mount.

I can really recommend that company - he's a great guy, with some great products :-)

The pictures with the rifle show the one-piece normal length, the close up shows the one-piece extended for larger scopes. The extended will have to be removed for barrel change.

Thanks Kenneth. This HG Firearms rail mount looks like it's a few millimetres lower to the bore than the Mauser Double Square Mount rail. I don't have one of the OEM rail mounts but Mauser did tell me that the rise from where the bottom of the mount sits on the receiver to the top of the rail surface is 21.5mm. That is, the interval between the blue arrows in the pic below.

Yes. it seems to be lower, although I don't have the measurements from HG-firearms.

Another advantage is that you can have the rail in 10 or 20 MOA for long range shooting.

The price is a LOT lower - especially if you have more than one scope, as you'll only need 2 rings for the rail per scope, not an entire mount.

Kenneth, do you have any knowledge as to how the HG Firearms rail connects to the M03 receiver? I've not found any info on that on the HG site.

Yes I do.

With the rail you get 2 custom made "nuts"(in lack of a better name), that are inserted into the holes in the base, and turned 1/4 of a round. Then you simply mount the rail with the screws that also comes with the rail. The screws can be fastened with the standard torx tool that comes with the Mauser m03.

Well that looks quite secure. Thanks for these pics. 

It's not a quick release system like the M03 Double Square Mount, but if quick release rail mounting rings are used, then that combo would provide much the same functionality. I guess the HG Firearms rail might obscure the barrel's open sights, if fitted. 

It would be interesting to see how the combination of the HG rail and suitable scope rings would position the scope's line of sight, noting that a scope's objective bell would need clearance from the barrel reinforce. I remember drawing scale diagrams, using data extracted from several sources, to ensure my combination of Mauser M03s, Double Square Mounts, standard Mauser 30mm rings and also Blaser R93 rings, would work with three different Zeiss and one Kahles scope. Doing this helped me place my orders, mostly sight unseen. It worked. :-)

Rail arrived today, so it was really fast.

As you can see, to mount it you need just one key, no other work is needed. Actually not tried in shooting range. Ammunition is Blaser CDC in 9,3x62, red dot is Meopta Meosight III
