We have a number of HP laptops, some old and some fairly new and use
them for our MapInfo Pro course.

During the course the participants produce a terrain model using
Thematic Map and overlay the model with a few vector layers. Then they
produce a 3D map in MapInfo Pro (the menu Map - Create 3D map) and
models are made.

On the older laptops the 3D maps are rendered fine, but on the new
laptops only the model it self is rendered - but without colours and
neither with the overlaying maps.

How and where can I fix this - is it in MapInfo or in Windows?

Hi Karl,

What version of MI are you using? I am using 9.5.1 and have a problem with 3D where the overlay appears coloured initially, but subsequent 3D maps appear without the overlaid raster images or layers. I found that selecting Refresh Texture (right click on the 3D map > Refresh Texture) corrects the problem, but that I wasn't able to replicate the issue.

Im unsure if Version 10.0.1 has corrected any of the issues, or whether the 3D functionality of MapInfo Professional is widely used. From reading posts, people tend to use Encom Engage 3D or Vertical Mapper to render their 3D maps, due to improved speed and functionality.

Hi Karl:
The most common issues people have with 3D rendering capabilities in
MI Pro have to do with OpenGL library compatibilities with their video
cards. Sometimes the video cards\drivers don’t like certain OpenGL
functions, so there are two things we can do to get around this fairly
easily.
In MapInfo, Under Options~Preferences~Map Window, there is a check box
to Enable Hardware acceleration for 3D Map windows. Uncheck that and
reopen your workspace\3D Mapper.
Basically that turns off any OpenGL functions sent from MI Pro and
lets the video card on your machine do its thing without anything
added from us.

Other way is to go into your Windows Control Panel Display settings
and turn down\turn off any acceleration for this video card under the
troubleshooting tab.
Usually the first one does the trick.

We are using MapInfo Pro 10 (just saw the .1 upgrade yesterday). We do
have Engage and Vertical Mapper - but our course participants don't,
so we use the thematic mapping as a poor man's tool for 3d
visualization.

Bill's advice worked nicely.
